Glossary

garnish
A piece of fruit or vegetable, or a combination of these, that adorns a cocktail. Garnishes enhance the cocktail's appeal, and are designed to complement the cocktail's ingredients through both their appearance and their taste.

frozen
A type of cocktail prepared in a blender with crushed ice.

highball
A type of cocktail served on ice and consisting of one part liquor topped with two parts soda or other mixer.

mixing glass
A tall glass or plastic tumbler used for mixing cocktails.

muddle
To lightly crush cocktail ingredients in the glass using a wooden pestle (called a "muddler") or the back of a spoon.

rimmer
A device designed for creating a salt rim or sugar rim on cocktail glasses. A rimmer typically has two or three round compartments - one containing a sponge for the juice or water used to wet the rim and another compartment or two to hold salt and/or suger. The glass is placed top-down first on the sponge section for wetting, and then dipped in the salt or sugar to form the decorative rim.

rocks
Ice. A cocktail served "on the rocks" is served in a glass with ice.

shaker
A cup, usually made of aluminum or stainless steel, specially designed for mixing cocktails. Some shakers come with a specially designed lid for shaking, straining, and pouring. Others are styled as an open tumbler. An open-style shaker is inverted over a
mixing glass for shaking, and then used with a separate strainer for pouring.

sip stick
A small drinking straw, usually made of plastic, served with cocktails and used for sipping or stirring, as desired.

strainer
A utensil designed to fit over the opening of a cocktail shaker with holes designed to let the liquid pour out of the cup and keep ice and other objects from pouring out.
