Traditional Manhattan

This classic Manhattan recipe is well worth the work it takes to prepare it.

Ingredients:
Dash of bitters (e.g., Angostura)
One cherry (for muddling)
Ice (enough to fill rocks glass)
6 to 16 drops of sweet vermouth (to taste)
2 ounces whiskey (American or Bourbon)
Another cherry (for garnish)

Put the bitters and one cherry (no stem) into a rocks glass. Muddle the bitters and cherry for a few seconds. Fill the glass with ice, leaving the muddled ingredients in the bottom. Add the sweet vermouth and the whiskey. Garnish with the remaining cherry.
