Towns from Nevada's Past
Elko County
Ruby Valley
This is definitely one of the most beautiful places that we've seen in Nevada. What makes this valley suitable for this web site is that the famous Donner party passed through here on its way to California. They camped at the current site of the National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters. Another interesting fact is that the Donner party missed a chance to cross the Ruby Mountains at Harrison Pass. They took the long way around and went to the south (around the mountains rather than through them.) This delayed them so they didn't get through the Sierras before winter hit. The rest is history. Just south of this valley is a Pony Express station.
