Click this button to return to my Home PageLincoln County also has a long and active train history. Many pictures included here are of trains and train history. In fact, the library in Caliente is in an old train station. The Meadow Valley Wash is one of the best places to watch trains. On our visit, we counted 18 trains. Elgin, an old train siding has recently refurbished their school. Look for pictures of that in the near future. Barclay was a Mormon settlement in the late 1860's, but became a train siding for the Salt Lake Railroad in 1904.
Mining was important in Lincoln County too. Bristol Wells has three charcoal kilns still standing. The kilns turned pine into charcoal which fueled the ore smelter. Pioche still had ore cars suspended above the highway when we visited. Unfortunately, our pictures of Pioche got destroyed by water.
Lincoln County's most recent claim to fame is that it is the Gateway to UFOlogy. Because of its proximity to a secret government area, Rachel is a local hotspot for seeing UFO's. The State renamed Highway 375 "The Extraterrestial Highway". If you use your imagination in the picture below, you might just be able to see a UFO.
Below is a list of the pictures for Lincoln County. Lincoln County is far too interesting to pick our favorite cities. Because it is close to Clark County where we live, we travel there often and have many pictures. Hopefully, these will show the highlights and encourage you to take a vist to this interesting piece of Nevada. All services can be found in Caliente and most can be found in Pioche.
Unfortunately, we had some really cool pictures of the train station in Caliente, including the library, but they are MIA. We'll have to vist beautiful Lincoln County again and fill in the missing pictures. We revisited Lincoln County and added pictures of the Train Station, Elgin School, and Kershaw-Ryan State Park.
