Towns from Nevada's Past
Eureka County
Eureka
The Eureka County Museum is housed in the old Eureka Sentinel Building. This museum has many examples of printing technology used in the late 1800's. The Sentinel began publication in July of 1870. Eventually at least six newspapers served this area, but the Sentinel was the most influential. Eureka produced over $100 million in ore, most of which was lead. As with many old rural Nevada towns, some of Eureka was burned by a series of fires in 1872, 1875, and 1879. A flash flood in 1874 wiped out more of the town, killing at least seventeen people. We spent most of our time in Eureka examining the museum and studying the printing history. One of the more impressive sights in Eureka was the fairly new school. Rumors of those we spoke to in Currant, Nevada (in Nye County), claimed that they wanted to sent their kids to the schools in Eureka across 50 miles of dirt roads because the schools were better equipped than the schools in White Pine County (which is across paved roads!) Perhaps these are just rumors, but the parents felt very strongly about it. Eureka is an interesting town.
