Carson City

Carson City is the capital of Nevada. It has railroad and government history. The capitol building was built in approximately 1871. It was used until 1971 when the legislators moved to a more modern building. In the 1990's other renovations were done. Carson City was originally in Ormsby County but in 1969, the county and the city became one and became known as Carson City. In addition to the government offices, Carson City was an important stop on the Pony Express Trail, and when the Comstock Load was hit in Virginia City, Carson City acted as the gateway to the world. The Virginia and Truckee railroad was a famous short line railroad that was used to haul the silver and gold from Virginia City to Reno for distribution to the rest of the world. The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City is devoted to the railroad history of Carson City and surrounding areas. Two of the favorite engines of many of the tourists are pictured below. (The Virginai and Truckee named their locomotives. No. 18 is called Dayton and No. 22 is called Inyo) More information about the rairoad museum can be found here.
