Towns from Nevada's Past
Mineral County
Candelaria
This mining district is still very active today, and in the 1980's Candelaria district contained the largest silver mine in Nevada. In the 1880's, Candelaria had a population of almost 1000 and bragged of 27 saloons and no churches. This sleepy town even developed a municipal water system. The Carson and Colorado Railroad reached this town in 1882, but it isolation (and the lack of water) led to its demise. The new interests of the late 20th century have almost buried Old Candelaria.
