Towns from Nevada's Past
Mineral County
Aurora
Both Nevada and California claimed this town. Citizens were allowed to vote for candidates in both states. In 1863, a survey determined that it was in Nevada. The California folk reluctantly moved to Bodie.
Rumor has it that Samuel Clemens resided in Aurora for a short time. At its peak, over 10,000 residents lived here and over $30 million dollars in gold and silver were removed from this area. The town was made from bricks rather than lumber. This uniqueness led to its destruction after World War II when brick merchants sold the bricks. On our visit, new mining interests almost buried old Aurora. The 4-wheel road to Bodie was not passable.
