Youth Protection
In general, this site will follow the guidelines adopted by
the Pacific Skyline Council.
- This typically means no photographs of boys at work or
play. However, that policy can allow photos under such
circumstances, which T42 interprets as follows:
- Only back views are shown - no faces, or faces
have been digitally blurred, or real faces have
been replaced by a cartoon graphic, or are too
small to be recognizable.
- This allows our scouts to show off some of their good and
bad times, and share their experiences with other persons
with a genuine interest in scouting.
- With regards to adult information, we may in some cases
allow full names and phone numbers in addition to email
addresses, but only with their permission and only if
adults are currently registered with BSA.
- It appears that our local council website will no longer
post links to troop/pack/crew web sites that are on
commercial servers - this is an attempt to prevent Scouts
acessing pornography.
Web Site Layout and Philosophy
- Introduce the public to Troop 42
- Provide useful information to Troop 42 scouts, past,
present, and future.
- Provide trip reports and planning tips accessible to the
entire scouting world, as well as T42.
- Be suitable for scouts to author and maintain pages and
overall site.
- Provide current and correct information on upcoming
meetings and trips.
- Load quickly - use graphics sparingly, easy to navigate -
minimize scrolling.
- Where larger graphics are used, define picture pixel size
so text can load immediately.
- Be easy to program and maintain
- Avoid the need for expensive web page design programs.
This means being careful when using Word97 and Front Page
Express, as these may introduce LOTS of gobbldygook in
the code. .
- Use only industry standard HTML programming features Basic Web Display on Your Browser
- Initially any or all pages may have relatively simple
(crude) layouts while we focus on overall site design and
content. The layout of individual pages will be refined
at a later date. Avoid the need for horizonrtal
scrolling.
- Don't use frames - leave the entire screen for the page
we are trying to display.
- I recommend using CuteFTP for uploading files and
directory maintenance on the host server - it is so very
easy and reliable to use.
- Do not embed raw email addresses as these can be picked
up by a Spammer's search engine - various tricks are
availble to hinder the search engines (look at my email
link).
