March 1998 Snow Camping at Lake Alpine

Return to Old Trips page

This was the first recorded attempt at snow camping by Troop 42. The trip leader was trained in snow camping, per Council requirements.

Activities:
Saturday - drove to Lake alpine, loaded sleds, hiked about 400 yards, dragging sleds, to campsite, made snow shelters. Sunday, made breakfast, packed up and returned home early since it was raining.

Accommodations:
In snow shelters

The scouts and adults had no problems excavating shelters in over 10 feet of snow

Problems:
Rain got one scout rather wet, but no one was chilled since the weather was relatively warm.

An electric lantern is safe inside a snow cave, and casts a lot of light (more than this piucture suggests)

Can you tell from this photo that we camped relatively close to the trailhead and sledded our gear in?
