- Who:
- Pacific Skyline Council, Peninsula District, Troops 27,
28 and Crew, 42, 44, 101 and 175
- Where:

see map at bottom of page
- What:
- A Klondike Derby is camping in the snow and inter-troop
or patrol competitions. In 1999 T42 joined the Twin
Valley (SFBAC) District event at Eagle Mountain, since
our council does not run a Klondike Derby -T42 finsihed
2nd place overall.
- Trip Coordinator:
- Mr. Hitchings 650-578-0446 evgs, 650-689-8328 work
- Original Plan:
- Saturday 17th a.m. we drive up, camp on/in snow the
nights of 17 and 18, drive home on the 19th. 4WD not
required but use it if available, always carry chains.
Troops may return late afternoon on the 18th if they
wish. Actual Plan - came back Sunday
p.m. to avoid ominous forecast for lots of snow and high
winds Sunday night and Monday. This kept most scouits
warm and dry, though the actual weather
turned out to have been quite survivable (50 mph forecast
at ridgetops, only 20 mph at site).
- Competition:
- There will be competitive events, including the
tradtional sled race! Plan: The events will be Saturday
afternoon and Sunday morning. Actual -
set up camp Saturday pm, did events Sunday. Not all
troops completed all events but we had fun.
- Equipment Check:
- All troops are responsible for performing an equipment
check with their scouts prior to being accepted for this
trip. Actual - still some inadequacies -
train your checkers!
- Clothing
- On past trips in T42 many scouts had problems with one or
more parts of their clothing system, including boots and
especially mittens and gloves. Expect clothing will be
included in the pre-trip checkout.
- Shelter
- On the snow in tents for Saturday night. All 2nd night
attendees will hopefully sleep in snow shelters on Sunday
night. Tents can be used, but will be colder. A heated
emergency shelter for a limited number of scouts is
on-site. Actual: most troops made at
least one snow cave or quinzee.
- Sleds
- Scouts should bring saucers or plastic sleds to help
transport equipment over the snow. Troop (racing) sleds
should also be brought by each troop. Actual:
troop sleds varied and included plywood, traditional
klondike, PVC, plastic bucket types (inexpensive) etc.
- Special Award
- Polar Bear Patch - requires one parent participation in a
pre-trip meeting, scout must receive safety training from
qualified adult leader, scout must camp overnight in the
snow. the safety video(s) can be borrowed from Mr.
Hitchings 650-578-0446 evgs before 9 p.m.
- Really Neat Thing:
- Our neighbors, Troop 151 of Antioch, had a quinzee with
built-in 12 volt electric lighting, including a duplex
light switch just like at home.
