Zechariah 1:16, "Therefore thus saith the LORD; I am returned to Jerusalem with mercies: my house shall be built in it, saith the LORD of hosts, and a line shall be stretched forth upon Jerusalem."

In 539 B.C. the work on the temple had stopped; however, in approximately 520 or 519 B.C. the word of the Lord came to Zechariah. An encouraging word that the Lord was once again with the nation of Israel and the temple would be rebuilt.

Zechariah, "Jehovah remembers," prophesied during the days when Ezra was appointed to rebuild the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem. Eleventh in order of the minor prophets, Zechariah was a priest, the son of Berechiah and grandson of Iddo, who, along with Haggai, directed the rebuilding of the temple in the days of Zerubbabel.

Zechariah's visions reveal an apocalyptic prophesy with the glorious restoration of Jerusalem. Divided into two parts, the book prophesies of the restoration of the temple and the reestablishment of the king under Ezra and of the day of the kingdom to come.

Zechariah 9:9, "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass."

When the temple of the Lord was completed, the book of Ezra tells us that the people shouted with a great shout. However, they could not discern the noise of crying from the noise of joy when the foundation of the temple was completed because it was not the same as the one Solomon had built.

The book of Zechariah reveals a new temple and a new king. One who will sit upon the throne as a king and a priest. One who will judge with equity. One who will bring all the dispersed back to Jerusalem and destroy all their enemies.

From the time of His arrival in Jerusalem upon a donkey to the time of His return when they shall look upon Him Whom they have pierced, the book of Zechariah reveals the Christ, the Anointed One, in all of His glory.
