Deuteronomy 34:9, "And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the LORD commanded Moses."

It had been an arduous journey from Egypt to the land of Canaan, but when the descendants of Abraham arrived they were frightened by the people of the land. They were large in stature and their cities were compassed about by great walls. Therefore, they refused to enter into the land of promise. Because of their disobedience God sent them back into the wilderness to remain for forty years until that generation had died.

Now once again they had arrived at the land of promise. Moses, being forbidden by God to enter into the land, died in Mount Nebo where Joshua buried him. A new generation was about to enter into the land God had promised to their fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Deuteronomy 1:28-38, "Whither shall we go up? our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying, The people is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there. Then I said unto you, Dread not, neither be afraid of them. The LORD your God which goeth before you, he shall fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes; And in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how that the LORD thy God bare thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came into this place. Yet in this thing ye did not believe the LORD your God, Who went in the way before you, to search you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to shew you by what way ye should go, and in a cloud by day. And the LORD heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and sware, saying, Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see that good land, which I sware to give unto your fathers. Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and to him will I give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath wholly followed the LORD. Also the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, saying, Thou also shalt not go in thither. But Joshua the son of Nun, which standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: encourage him: for he shall cause Israel to inherit it."

Because of Joshua's obedience God chose him to lead the nation of Israel into the promised land.  Joshua became the captain of the host of Israel and did all that the Lord commanded him to do.

Joshua 1:3-6, "Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast. There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee. Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them."

The book of Joshua takes us into the land that God promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It reveals God as the Lord is My Banner. Jehovah-nissee, the God Who goes before us and conquers our enemies. He gives us strength  to defeat all our enemies when we are weak.
