I Samuel 13:13-14, "And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the LORD thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the LORD have established thy kingdom upon Israel for ever. But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the LORD hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the LORD commanded thee."
Saul had disobeyed God and because of his disobedience the kingdom of Israel was given unto another, a man of God's own choosing because he was a man after His Own heart. The book of II Samuel brings us into the reign of David, the youngest son of Jesse, of the tribe of Judah. David's reign began after the death of Saul and his sons; however, it was not without contestation. This book reveals the many battles, trials, and tests David had to overcome to triumph as the kingdom of Israel's mightiest king.
II Samuel 5:4-10, "David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. At Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months; and at Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years. And David dwelt in the stronghold, and called it the city of David. And David built the city round about from the Millo inward. And David became greater and greater, for the LORD, the God of hosts, was with him."
Only God can take the weak things of the world to confound the mightiest. God took a young shepherd boy and exalted him to be the greatest king who ever reigned in the world. From one small boy a nation grew to the strongest refuge on the earth. Through the words of II Samuel God truly reveals Himself as the One Who changes the times and the seasons. Who removes kings, and sets up kings. Who gives wisdom unto the wise and knowledge to those who know understanding. David, the one whose house and kingdom is established for ever before him and whose throne is established for ever.
