SyQuest SyJet internal EIDE drive

This page is still under construction. You may need to reload it to get the most recent version.

The internal EIDE model of SyQuest's SyJet drive allows PC users to benefit fully from the drive's speed, without installing a Fast SCSI port.

Technical summary

Compatible cartridges

SyJet drives are compatible with 1.5 GB SyQuest SyJet cartridges only.

System requirements

This drive is for use in an IBM-compatible '386, '486, or Pentium-class desktop or tower PC with an available mounting bay for 3.5-inch disk drives. Using a very inexpensive mounting kit, the drive can also be installed in a standard bay for 5.25-inch disk drives. Some PC models, however, require drives to be mounted using proprietary hardware; such systems may require special rails or may not accept the mounting kit.

To use this drive, your PC must have an IDE controller, which should be an Enhanced IDE controller. Nearly every PC has an IDE controller, but if you install this drive in an old PC (built before the mid-1990's), you may experience reduced performance and/or disk capacity, as a result of limitations in the system's IDE controller and/or its Basic Input/Output System (BIOS). These components can sometimes be upgraded, but not always. I can't provide any technical support on questions that pertain to the user's IDE controller, BIOS, or other system components rather than the drive.

A 40-pin cable is used to connect up to 2 IDE drives to a controller; make sure you have such a cable with an unused connector.

Supported PC operating systems include (according to the installation guide):

This drive is not for Mac users or PC laptop users. To connect a SyJet drive to a Macintosh system, you must use a SCSI interface. According to SyQuest technical Bulletin TB3334, IDE adapters on Apple and Apple clone computers don't work with the SyJet EIDE drive.

Software

Useful software for Windows 95 & 98, Windows 3.1x, DOS, and OS/2 can be found on new 1.5 GB cartridges or can be obtained by downloading i_352_1.exe, i_352_2.exe, and i_352_3.exe from the SyQuest FTP site. These files will create a set of 3 installation disks.

The following operating systems provide native IDE support (additional utilities are not available):
