A New Look For An Olds Car

Having been purchased new by the Cotner Funeral Home, the combination was briefly used first as an ambulance, then repainted gray and used for removals. After twenty-two years of service and at least one course of body work after a fender skirt fell off on the freeway, the funeral home traded in the car. We purchased the car from C.W. Coach a year later in 1996.

By 2006 the paint had faded and rust was beginning to blister through the old body work. The left quarter panel and rear bumper had been damaged when Columbus Police PTV 158 backed into it in a parking lot several years earlier. Eventually the brakes gave out. Later the car refused to start.

With the help of Amy's brother Matthew the three of us managed to push the 7,500 lbs. coach out of the garage and into the driveway. From there we had the car loaded up and hauled to the shop for work to begin.

Despite the rust and the collision damage the body was fairly solid, still working on one of these things is a big job. The shop worked on her off and on for several months in between smaller jobs.

This is the car just minutes after rolling out of the shop with the bodywork complete. We repainted the car using 1972 Oldsmobile 98 colors.

The blue is Oldsmobile Royal Blue Iridescent, which we matched using an original paint chart. To view a larger version of these documents, click on the images above.
