According to Richmond County, NC Deeds Bk 000, pgs, 240, 241, On 17th of April 1818 James Norton, Sr. of Richmond County deeded to Martin Norton or Richmond County, for the sum of $200, one hundred acres on the East side of Joes Creek beginning at a stake, two pines pointers and runs West 21 chains and 50 links to a state two pines pointers then South 43 chs., 40 links until a line running North which leads across three surveys viz 123, 100, and 258 acres crossing a dividing line between the said James Norton and his brother William. This deed is witnessed by Miles V. Norton and James Norton.
The above deed was proven in open court by the oath of James H. Norton, and ordered to be registered by A.D. Crawford in January Term 1825. Filed and registered March 19, 1900 by H. D. Gibson , Register of Deeds.

3. ISHAM3 NORTON, SR. (JAMES2, WILLIAM1) was born Abt. 1752 in Northampton Co., NC, and died Abt. 1833 in Richmond County, NC. He married ELIZA WALKER CALHOUN Abt. 1789. She was born Abt. 1755 in Richmond County, NC, and died Abt. 1825.
Notes for ISHAM NORTON, SR.:
Isham resided in Northamption Co., NC during the Revolutionary War. He was drafted and served two tours (9 mos.) under Capt. John Peterson, Capt David Short; General Richard Caswell, Commanding Officer. Then under Capt. Jesse Dupree and Col. Linton, General Sumner. He was present and engaged in a skirmish with the enemy at the Town of Halifax, NC. His service was altogether performed in different parts of North Carolina, and he was very little with the Continental Troops. US Pension Certificate #16263, Richmond County, NC. Isham's pension file #S7 265, shows last pension paid 9-4-1833. Certificate of Pension issued the 20th day of July 1833 and sent to Martin D. Crawford Rockingham, NC.
In March 1787 Isham Norton, Sr., some of his brothers including James Norton, Jr, and some of his neighbors including one Starling Rachels, also moved to Richmond County. The Nortons, Rachels, and Hathcocks were all neighbors in Richmond County and lived near Joe's Creek. Mr. John Arch Rachels provided the names of the children of Isham Norton, Sr.
Starling Rachels was listed very close to the Nortons in the 1786 Census of Northampton Co., NC, and the 1790 Census of Richmond County. Fredrick Norton and Serling (Starling) Rachel witnessed James Norton, Sr's land grand #1084 in 1799. He testified that Isham Norton was born in Northampton Co., NC in Isham's pension application.
According to Richmond County, NC Court Minutes, Term of Court December 1804, Isam Norton, Nazareth Norton, Elias Norton, Miles Norton and Elisha Hathcock were ordered to work on a road in this county, 11 Dec, 1804. Neither Nazareth, Elias nor Mill (spelled like this) Norton were listed on the 1790 or 1800 census of Richmond County, NC. Nazareth was listed on the 1830 Census of Richmond County, pg. 217.
In the year 1823 Silas Norton, David Norton and James W. Norton petitioned the court for permission to build a bridge in Richmond County.
According to Apprentice & Orphan Records of Richmond County, NC, Silas Norton, 8 years and 6 months old and Zella Hathcock, 5 years old were bound to William Norton, June 1816 in Richmond County, NC.
Mark Hathcock, 13 years old, 'orphan' and Elijah Hathcock, 10 years old, 'orphan' were bound to Nazareth Norton, (no date)

Willie Norton was listed on the 1790 Census of Northampton Co, NC pg. 73. Only one male was listed in his household; himself, over 16 years old and one female (probably his mother)
William, Isham and William Norton were listed in the payroll of Capt Augustin Spain's Company of the 2nd NCRegiment of Militia. All three were Corporals.

According to his death certificate the parents of Walter A. Wallace (born 7-9-1874, died 10-1-1939) were Winnie Wallace and Godfrey Norton: This is particularly interesting because her sister (Mary Wallace) was married to Daniel Norton. (Source: Bill Wallace)
Godfrey Norton at the time of his death was seized and possessed of a body of land composed of several tracts all in the County and State aforesaid on Big Beaver Dam Creek. First tract, known as the 'Home tract' is bounded by the lands of Charles Malloy and Darling Norton and contains fifty acres, more or less. Second tract, is bounded by the first tract and the lands of Hugh McLaurin and contains fourteen acres, more or less. Third tract, is bounded by the lands of Wm. Snead, Hugh McLaurin and the heirs of Elijah Norton and contains ninety acres, more or less. Fourth tract, is bounded by the fifth tract hereinafter mentioned, the lands of William Snead & Darling Norton and contains 23 acres, more or less. Fifth tract, is bounded by aforementioned tract, the lands of Darling Norton, Wm. Snead & James Rachels and contains forty acres, more or less. Notes for BERRY NORTON:
He was drafted into service as a private in Captain Blue's Company of the North Carolina Militia in the War of 1812.
Berry is described in Mary's Claim of Widow's Pension as about 6 ft. tall, with black hair, black eyes & a dark complexion. She also stated that Berry lived in Richmond County, NC for 20 years and then lived in Fayette County, GA until his death.
Berry Norton, his son Nazareth by his first wife and Mary Waldrop Norton his second wife are buried in The Norton Family Cemetery in Fayette Co., Ga.

Notes for JOHN CALVIN NORTON:
John Calvin was a member of a committee composed of Younger Snead and others which established Snead's Grove Methodist Church and remained a loyal supporting member until his death. Land for the school house and church at Snead's Grove was donated by Younger Snead and John Calvin Norton furnished the lumber for the two buildings. The wooden school building was moved to become a recreation building for the Old Laurel Hill Presbuterian Church when funds became available for the new brick school in 1924.
John Calvin was a tall, erect, medium weight, fair complexioned man, with clear penetrating eyes.
Immaculate in dress and surroundings, and liked everyone else around him to be the same way. He had an
old-time dignity, was gentle, but had plenty of temper if the occasion demanded it.

Born in Richmond County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting at Camp Wyatt at age 20. June 23, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded in the arm at Gettysburg, PA., July 3, 1863. returned to duty in September, 1863 - February, 1864, and was present or accounted for through February 1865. She was a widow with three children. The couple set up housekeeping on a 50-acre farm (bought from Younger Snead) located on Leith's Creek near Snead's Grove and five miles north of Laurinburg, NC. Harriet died of Cancer, bur. Snead's Grove Cemetery by the side of her husband, John Calvin.

James and 1st wife, parents of three daughters, names unknown. Jim Norton traded in real estate (farms). He at one time owned a farm, which is a part of the Will and Harriett Norton farm, and sold it to Mr. Hodgin. John C. Norton bought this farm from Mr. Hodgin for Will and Hattie Norton.
Jim first married a Butler girl from South Carolina and that had three girls. She died, then he married Jennie Morris of Maxton (sister of E. Morris, plant nurseryman), and they lived near Rockfish, NC. Jim Norton is buried in the Woods Cemetery there.
