Point Reyes Bike Getaway from San Francisco
In 2002, as part of a West Coast wedding bonanza, I took a mini bike trip from San Francisco to Point Reyes National Seashore in Marin County. Here are me and my brother atop Mount Tamalpais on the way out of town. It was pretty up there, though the downhill on the other side was a bit hair-raising for a CSD such as myself. Hotel Inverness store
We rode up the coast to the very tiny, bizarrely Czech-influenced town of Inverness, right near the national parkland. Our motel had intricate woodcarvings that you can't quite see here. The "downtown" area featured this happening little store, with Tamales Bay in the background.
riding through dairy farms gazelles
Riding through Point Reyes National Seashore, this is what you saw. There were a bunch of active dairy farms, which I dressed to match, herds of gazelles wandering around, and foggy hills galore.
windblown trees out near the lighthouse And did I mention the wind? Check out these battered trees near the lighthouse, at the end of the point. They're practically growing sideways.
pretty rocks steps down the cliff
It took us a leisurely day to make it out to the lighthouse and back. We checked out the interesting rock formations by the lighthouse and a seal overlook.
stream on the beach During our second full day in the park, we rode the only other road, which had more hills and more wind and took us to an old dairy farm near the beach. Not the kind of beach weather I'm used to.

Wildflowers were in bloom everywhere.
By day 3, it was time to return to San Francisco. We took a different route back, passing through Point Reyes Station, where we had a great breakfast, and then riding along a bike path through redwood forests in Samuel P. Taylor Park for part of the way. It got sunny and warm once we left the coast. bike path
Golden Gate Bridge towers and our bikes friends
As if on cue, the fog rolled in when we got to the Golden Gate Bridge. Back in San Francisco, we were happy to bump into friends also out on their bikes.
