Delos is the geographic and
spiritual heart of the Cyclades, the traditional birthplace of the twin
deities, Artemis and Apollo. Just as the Sanctuary at Delphi is
sacred to Apollo, so is this barren, windswept island.

The first souls to greet us as
we stepped onshore were a mule and a donkey. The cat, of course,
wasn't awake yet. The site is extensively excavated, and the museum
contains some very ancient objects.

Cycladic, archaic, classical
Greek and Roman influences are everywhere.

Many of the houses and
structures still have some of their original mosaic tiled floors.

The artistry of the
mosaics is superb. Those at left, right, and below are from the House of
the Actors. They are in their original locations, inside the rooms.

The Museum at Delos is unique
for its group of Cycladic sculptures from the Archaic period...
|
|
|
|
...also for
its examples of Hellenistic painting...
|
|
...and
objects of everyday life.
