Short Term Missions trip to Bolivia, Nov 20-Dec 6, 2008

November 10, 2008

Yes!  We're Going to Bolivia!

When I wrote my last letter it looked like traveling to Bolivia would not be wise. I was disappointed, especially since my mom was planning to accompany me this year.  I hoped and prayed that somehow it would still be possible to go. I know I wasn't the only one praying. Corina and Marco, still at El Jordán in Bolivia, were praying that I would be able to come help and that their other co-workers and other volunteers would be able to return. I'm sure many of you were praying as well, not only for my opportunity to go, but also for the rest of the missionaries who had to leave and for the people left behind in a country of turmoil. God answered our prayers!
A protest march on the capital city in Bolivia did not lead to violence. The opposing parties were finally able to make some compromises and come to an agreement that has brought peace, at least for now. The issues have not gone away and there is potential for unrest in the future. Some critical dates will be coming next year when Bolivians vote on changes in their leadership and constitution, but for now the leadership at Avant has given our missionaries permission to return to their work in Bolivia.
Getting entry visas has been a bit of a nerve wracking experience this year too. At one point, I called the consulate and they said they didn't think they had my documents. I was afraid that I would not only be unable to get my visa, but my passport was lost as well. To my great relief, they called back and said they had found my documents and explained the problem that was holding up the process. In the end, I didn't get the tourist visa I wanted. (It would have been good for a visit of up to 30 days each year for 5 years.) Instead I received a visa that is only good for this year, but I'm not complaining, it's all I need for now and God will take care of what I need in the future. Mom also had unexpected results in applying for her visa. The Bolivian Consulate sent back her application and documentation signed, dated, and stamped with approval but said she would have to wait and get her visa at the airport in Santa Cruz when we arrive. That is not exactly what we wanted either, but God never promised to provide everything we want. He promised to meet our needs. Mom will get her visa in His time. Please pray that we don't run into any snags while getting the visa in Santa Cruz. Our plane arrives just after midnight and it will not be a fun time to try resolving any complications.
The time is rapidly approaching. We fly to Bolivia on November 20th. I will have updates posted on my web site while we are in Bolivia, so please check it out occasionally to see what is happening. Also, if you would like me to e-mail the updates directly to you just send me an e-mail and let me know. As always, if you would like to contribute to the trip you can send a check to Avant Ministries (made out to Avant) and enclose a note designating it for "Medin's travel fund". You can also give using a credit card at the Avant Ministries web site.
Thank you for your prayers. Whatever you do, don't stop!

Medin
