Urubamba Seminary

Hello from Costa Rica,

This is the first update since we returned from Perú in July and since I have been in Costa Rica. I arrived on August 24th to attend language school at the Instituto de Lengua Espanola in San Jose, Costa Rica. We had three days of orientation and entrance tests to properly place you into your classes. We attend four 50 minute classes, one in fonetica, two in gramatica, and one in lenguaje. It is all very challenging for me but I will surely come away with a better grasp of Spanish than I have ever had in my life.
We are planning on taking two trimesters of classes—which will have us in Costa Rica through April. Then we will be back in Iowa on deputation for the months of May, June, and July. Then in August-October we will be teaching in Perú. From there things will depend on our level of support and my responsibilities with the seminary in Urubamba.
The Lord has met all our needs and then some. We are at 52% of our support. We are blessed with a wonderful prayer base that upholds us in many ways. Even in these financially challenging times we are doing fine. We are hopeful that we will be at full support by August 2010.
Wendy and I have both officially retired. Wendy had served the residents of Bethany as the Director of Activities for 25 years. She has talked many times about how the residents were a blessing to her. I spent the last 25 years at Lewis Central teaching science and coaching for most of those years. But now God has called us to this ministry in Perú for however long He chooses.
In July 2010 there will be a two week training process for us at Baptist Mid-Missions in Cleveland, Ohio. BMM is our mission board and oversees our training and placement in Perú.  Our responsibilities in Perú will be teaching, assisting graduates of the seminary in church planting, and helping with administration at the seminary. We will also be representing the seminary in the states in trying to encourage churches and individuals to prayerfully and financially support work-study opportunities for students at the seminary called Seminario Evangelico Bautista Indepediente del Cusco, SEBIC. It costs approximately $400 per year for a student to attend SEBIC. The students are very willing to work and there is a great deal of work to be done on the seminary property. The most exciting at this time is the new chapel. This past summer a group from Valley View Baptist church in Council Bluffs, Iowa was in Urubamba and helped pour the cement for the chapel floor. They worked hand in hand with the Perúvian students and got the entire floor poured on one Saturday. The work-study program is a win-win situation. The money provided by the work-study gifts pays the students to work on the chapel project and many other ongoing projects at SEBIC. Please consider supporting a student through the work-study programs. At the end of this letter there will be information available if you would like to support us and or the students at SEBIC.
On a personal note: Wendy remained in Iowa for the birth of our fifth grandson, Kyle Joseph Parrott, to Tiffany, our youngest daughter, and her husband Chad. I was in Costa Rica when he was born, so I will look forward to meeting him in December. There are two big brothers, Will 3 and Luke 2. There are some great pictures on our Facebook, Pat Campbell, of all five of our grandsons. Amber, our middle daughter, is the mother of JD and Aiden. Her husband is Dan Downs.
Interestingly enough our oldest daughter, April, is here in Costa Rica where she is a missionary through Commission To Every Nation serving the surfing community in Jaco, Costa Rica. We have been together once since my arrival. April will be taking an intensive Spanish course with Wendy here at the institute starting in October.
Prayer requests: 1. That we will be able to learn Spanish 2. That our support goals will be met in a timely fashion 3. That Wendy will arrive safely in Costa Rica 4.That God will be honored and receive all the glory through our ministry to Perú
Praises: 1. For our new grandson, Kyle Joseph Parrott 2. That our monthly support is at 52% 3. That God is good and meets all our needs 4. That He is the power unto salvation
