“It was through the urging of their friends, the Reid family, who had come to Canada from Aberdeenshire earlier that William Grassie and his wife, the former Ann Anderson, brought their family of 13 children, in a sailing boat from Scotland in 1847, and settled at Mt. Albion near Hamilton, Ont.

“I remember my Grandmother (Jennie Purcell) telling me that when the Grassie’s arrived, Mr. Reid and his family had a house all ready and furnished, and a meal on the table when they got there.

“The father, William Grassie, and his sons, started in the business of Blacksmithing, which in those days included the manufacturing of wagons, sleighs, ploughs, and most of the agricultural implements then in use. They built up a large trade and later, the sons set up their own businesses in various locations.

“I have only the names of eleven children, and just some of the dates of births and deaths.”
