GRIEVING THE HOLY SPIRIT
By James L. Thornton
Ephesians 4:30. And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. (KJV)
What Is It To Grieve The Holy Spirit Of God?
We Are Startled At The Expression.
Few Of Us Would Have Thought Of Using It If We Had Not Have Found It In The Bible.
It Cannot Be Mere Figure Of Speech.
It Must Describe A Strange, Sad, Touching Fact.
In The Midst Of An Exhortation On Christianity, In This Chapter,
Where Paul Tells The Ephesians To,
"Speak The Truth,"
"Beware Of Foolish Talking,"
"Be Industrious,"
"Be Honest,"
"Be Kind,"
"Be Charitable,"
"Put Away Bitterness,"
"Put Away Evil Speaking,"
"Be Slow To Take Offense,"
"Be Always Ready To Forgive."
Sandwiched In The Midst Of This Paul Says,
"Do Not Give Pain To The One Who Loves You."
We Can Always Hurt Most Those Who Love Us Most.
"It Would Break Your Mother's Heart," Has Stopped Many A Boy From Some Act He Was Tempted To Do.
So, "Grieve Not The Holy Spirit,..."
The Scriptures Represent God As Having Feelings And Emotions.
Not Just As Being Omnipotent, And Omnipresent.
But As Being, "Pleased," "Joyful," "Delighting," In The Love And Obedience Of His People.
Also As Being, "Grieved," "Offended," "Angry," "Alienated," By Sin.
God Can Feel Both Pleasure And Pain.
The Holy Ghost Is Our Constant Companion.
He Is Ever With Us, Seeking To Direct Us. God Is Within Us.
The Holy Ghost Is God Dwelling In Our Body Along With Our Spirit.
John 14:16.(Jesus) And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
17. Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
18. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
Because He Is So Near He Is Much Concerned With Our Character And Conduct.
Everything We Say Or Do The Holy Ghost Sees It And Reacts In Some Manner.
It Is Of The Self Sacrificing Nature Of Love That It Lays Itself Out To Be Wounded When It Is Treated Unworthy
The Personality Of The Holy Ghost Is Of The Kindest Nature, And Easily Offended.
The Holy Ghost Is Not Only An Influence, A Wind, A Fire, An Oil, A Dove, A Dew, But A Divine Personality.
How We May Grieve The Holy Spirit Of God.
In Our Reading Paul Has Been Referring To Certain Sins Such As Falsehood, Anger, Bitterness, Corrupt Speech, Then Says, "Grieve Not The Holy Spirit Of God,..."
It Is Sin That Grieves, Or Pains God.
ALL Sin Is Grievous To Him, As Holiness Is Hurt By Unholiness And Love By Unworthiness.
This Should Be One Warning Against Our Carelessness In Falling Into Temptation.
If We Do Not Feel It, God Does.
We Should Be Warned By Remembering That Our Sin Hurts God; Did It Not Kill Jesus?
The Character Of God Is Always Revealed As Purity, And Holiness.
Sin Will Keep The Holy Ghost From Possessing It's Temple.
A Little Dirt Will Stop A 10,000 H.P. Motor.
A Little Insulation Stops 12,000 Volts.
Sin In Our Life Will Effectually Stop The Power Of The Holy Ghost In Our Lives.
He Is Grieved By Insincerity And Falsehood. Because He Is The Spirit Of Truth.
Psalm 15:1. ( A Psalm of David.) LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill?
2. He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.
Psalm 51:6. Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. (KJV)
He Is Grieved By Malice And Unkindness.
For He Is The Spirit Of Love.
1 John 4:7. Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
8. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. (KJV
Love Seems To Out Weigh All Other Characteristics One Can Possess.
1 Corinthians 13:13. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. (KJV)
Why We Should Be Careful Not To Grieve The Holy Spirit Of God.
Paul Tells Us By The Holy Ghost, "Ye Are Sealed Unto The Day Of Redemption." (Ephesians 4:30)
This Seal, Or Signet, Is A Mark Of Ownership.
2 Timothy 2:19. Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. (KJV)
Revelation 7:3. Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. (KJV)
It Is A Seal Of Guardianship.
This Is Not A Sealing Against Spoilage, Which Was Unknown In Paul's Day.
If We Are Spiritual Christians We Are "Sealed;" Or, We Have The Mark Of Gods Recognition, And Owning, Given By The Spirit.
The Holy Ghost Brings Us Into A Higher Fellowship, And This Higher Fellowship Brings Higher Claims.
It Brings Hope Of Our Future Redemption.
"..Ye Are Sealed Unto The Day Of Redemption."
To Each Soul The Day Of God’s Forgiveness, And Welcome Of The Repentant, Is A Day Of Redemption;
But Perfect Redemption Is Deliverance From All Evil.
This At Present Is A Hope, And The Hope Depends On the Work Of The Spirit Of God.
This "Sealing" Lasts Beyond Death: "Till The Day Of Redemption." (Ephs. 4:30)
Paul Never Regards The Day Of Death As Marking The Day Of Final Security, But Rather, Fixes It For That Day Which Completes The Redemption Of Body And Soul Into Their Changeless Incorruptibility.
The Holy Spirit Has Come To Abide With Us Forever, Surely We Ought Not To Offend His Pure Being.
