JESUS IN THE MIDST

By James L. Thornton

Matthew 18:20. "For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them."

A Minister Dreamed Of A Visitor Who Entered The Church Just As He Was Ready To Begin His Sermon.

The Church Was Almost Full. He Came Down The Aisle Looking For A Seat, And Someone Offered Him A Seat Next To Them.

Everything In The Dream Was So Distinct Except The Features Of The Stranger, The Pew, The Man Who Gave Him A Seat.

The Countenance Was Clearly Impressed, Serious, And It Seemed Great Sorrow Had Creased His Brow.

His Dress Was Poor And Plain, And His Bearing, Exceeding Humble.

The Stranger Paid Respectful Attention To The Message.

In His Dream, The Minister Could Not Take His Eyes Off The Stranger.
In His Mind, As He Preached, He Constantly Wondered, Who Is This Man?
But The Stranger Slipped Away Before He Could Meet Him.

The Preacher Inquired Of The Man Who Offered The Seat To Him.
"It Was Jesus Of Nazareth," The Man Replied.

The Minister Expressed Great Disappointment, Because He Didn’t Get To Greet Him.
"O, Do Not Be Troubled," The Man Said, "He Has Been Here Today,
And No Doubt He Will Come Again."

And Now In Reality

What Would You Have Done Differently If You Had Known That Jesus Would Sit In This Congregation Today?

Would You, Even Now, Offer Him A Seat Next To You?

What A Difference The Worship Service Would Be If We Realized Who Was Here.

The Pastor Would Invite Him To The Platform To Speak To Us.

We Would Want To Ask Him So Many Questions
1. What Do You Think Of Our Sanctuary? The Vaulted Ceilings,
The Beautiful Pews, The Carpet?
Were You Impressed With Our Music?
Did The Songs We Sang Please You?
What About The Arraignments Of Our Choir?
How About The Order Of Worship?

We Would Not Want Anything To Displease Him And Keep Him From Coming Again.

"He Has Been Here Today, And No Doubt He Will Come Again."

Jesus said "Yet A Little While I Am With You And Then I Go Unto Him That Sent Me." (John 7:33)
"Yet A Little While…" Here At The Beginning Of Another Week, He Is With Us.
"For Where Two Or Three Are Gathered Together In My Name, There Am I In The Midst Of Them."

Let Us Fix Our Attention On Him That We May Please Him.

The Lord Himself Is Truly, Though Invisible, In The Midst Of His People.

Just As Surely As He Moved That Sabbath Day In Capernaum "When The Sun Was Setting" (Mark 1:32-34).

He Is Here To Heal.

In One Of The Most Fearful Time Of Their Lives, Jesus Came To His Disciples, Walking On The Sea.

If You Are Fearful, Jesus Is Here.

If You Are Hungry, In Need, He Is Here To Give To You.
If You Are Downcast, Downtrodden, Jesus Is Here To Lift You Up
If You Are Gilt Ridden--Jesus Says, "I Forgive."

Many Times We Wear Ourselves Out Trying To Get Everything Done.

Anxiety Builds Up.
There Is Silence Instead Of Praise.
Few Will worship, Many Are Sullen.
Opposition Arises Among Us.
Should Be Helpers Become Those who Hinder.
There Is Discouragement, And Sleepless Nights.

Then A Still Small Voice says, "There Standeth One Among You Whom Ye Know Not."

Jesus Told Phillip, "Have I Been So Long Time With You, And Yet Thou Hast Not Known Me?" (John 14:9)

There Is One Among Us Today Who Knows All About Us, Who Has All The Answers To All Of Our Problems.

Let Us Worship Today To Please Him

He Is Here Today, And No Doubt He Will Come Again.
