A STUDY ON REVELATIONS

By James L. Thornton

In This Part #1 Of A Three Part Study Of Revelation We See How That John Is Transported Into Heaven, Whether Literally Or Figuratively Is Debatable, While There He Sees Heaven In All It's Glory And Splendor. He Is Commanded To Write In A Book All That He Sees. In This Study We Are Beginning With Chapter Four And Five As They Contain The First Of The Seven Visions Which John Saw And Are A Prelude To The Rest.

Revelation 1:3. Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand. (KJV)

We Could Wonder Why We Do Not Hear More Preaching, Or Scripture Reading, From This Book When It Is The Only Biblical Book Which Specifically Promises A Blessing To Those Who Read It, And Also To Those Who Hear It Read.

There Is Grace Promised To Both Minister And Congregation Who Live Up To The Spirit Of The Scripture.

Probably This Verse Is The Earliest Authority For The Public Reading Of The New Testament Scripture.

In This Study We Are Beginning With Chapter Four And Five As They Contain The First Of The Seven Visions Which John Saw, And Are A Prelude To The Rest

It Will Spare Us Much Useless Labor If We Note What God Has Not Said In This Book, As Well As What He Has Said.

1. We Have Few Definite Marks Of Time.

For Estimating The Duration Of The Whole Period Of The Visions, And For Its Division Into Periods Of Years, We Have, Practically, No Data At All.

There Have Been Many Elaborate Efforts To Fix Days And Years On The "Approaching End Of The Age" In Which Great Ingenuity Is Wasted On A Hopeless Attempt,

"To Know The Times Or The Seasons, Which The Father Hath Put In His Own Power." (Acts 1:7)

2. We Have Few Marks Of Place.

We Are Not Told Whether The Opening Of This Seal, Or That, Is To Find Its Sphere Of Fulfillment Over The Roman Empire, Or Within The Jewish State, Or Over The Wide World, Or, If Over A Portion Of It, What That Portion Is.

3. We Have No Marks To Show Us,

Whether The Seven Seals, Vials, And Trumpets Represent Seven Distinct Series Of Events, Or, If So, Whether They Are Synchronous Or Consecutive, Nor, In Either Case, Over What Time Each One Lasts, Nor Whether There Is Any Space Of Time Between One And The Other; Nor, If There Be, How Much It Is.

For All We Know They May Even Lap Over, One On To Another.

Now, When All These Points Are Left Open In The Sacred Word, It Seems To Us To Be Going Far Beyond The Limits Of A Proper Reverence For God's Word To Assign Definitely This, Or That Figure, To This, Or That, Special Event, Time, And Place, When The Figure Alone Is Employed, And Neither Time Nor Place Is Indicated At All.

Some May Say, "If So Much Is Unsaid, And Therefore Uncertain, All Is Uncertain, And The Book Is Useless."

Not So; There Is Very Much That Is Fixed And Clear.

There Is In The Book A Clear General Plan.

Its Key-Note Is, "Behold, I come quickly:" (Rev. 3:11; 22:7,12)

Revelation Ends With The In Bringing Of The New Heavens And The New Earth.

Revelation Reveals That All Forces In Nature,
Incidents In History,
And Movements Of Providence,
Are Preparing The Way Of The Lord.

In Other Words Everything That Happens Moves Us One Step Closer To His Coming.

It Gives A Glimpse Into The Upper World

Revelation Chapter Four And Five.

The Opening Vision:
1. Heaven.
2. Its Throne.
3. Its Inhabitants.
4. Its Songs.

Revelation 4:1. After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter. (KJV)

It Is Fitting That John Should See This Vision First. Before The Series Of Visions Which Unfold To Us The Struggles Of Earth Through Which The Church Must Pass On Her Way To The End of Time.

First He Has A Glimpse Of Heaven, Its Occupants, Listens To Their Songs, And Also A Sight Of "Him Who Is In The Midst Of The Throne."

Before The Last Great Inspired Prophecy Is To Be Unrolled, The Apostle John Has A Glimpse Of The Seat Of Power In Heaven.

Before He Sees Those Scenes Of Awe And Terror Which His Pen Will Record, He Is Permitted To Gaze Into the Sacred Courts Above.

Before The Four Horsemen Ride. (Rev. 6:1-8)

Before The Great Earthquake In Which "The Sun Became Black As Sackcloth Of Hair And The Moon Became As Blood."(Rev. 6:12)

Before He Saw The Stars Fall, And The Heavens Depart As A Scroll Rolled Up, And The Mountains And Islands Disappear. (Rev. 6:13-14)

Before The Terrible Beasts, And Locusts, And Scorpions, Were Unleashed. (Rev. 9:1-12) John Saw A Place Of Peace And Tranquillity, Untouched And Untroubled By Earth’s Affairs.

John Is Not The Only One Who Tells Us Of Such A Place.

The Existence Of That World Is Assured By Our Lord And His Apostles Throughout Their Teachings. (John 14:1-4)

This Earth Is Not the Only Realm In Which Holy Souls Dwell.

Nor Is The Continuity Of Life Broken Off As, One By One, They Go Home To Be With the Lord.

The Apostle John, By No Means, Takes Us Into An Unknown Land.

It Is The Father’s House.

We Go By Invitation Only.

John 14:6b. "...no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

Revelation 4:1. After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter. (KJV)

It Is Humanly Accessible.

There Is A Door Opened, A Door To Admit.

Millions Have Passed Through It, And Millions More Will Till The End Of Time.

There Is A Voice To Welcome John, "Come Up Hither, …"

It Is Spiritually Entered.

Rev. 4:2a. "And immediately I was in the spirit: ..."

John Was Transformed And Transported Into, And Onto, A Position Where He Could See All, And Hear All.

He Had A Panoramic View Of Both Heaven And Earth.
Looking Down He Sees Earth In Trouble,
Looking Around He Sees Heaven In Glory And Rest.
He Saw, He Heard.

Let Us Look At The First Thing Which John Saw, And It Was The Most Prominent Thing In Heaven.

Revelation 4:2b. ... and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne. (KJV)

A Throne... Not Thrones… But One Throne.

There Is A Throne, The Seat Of Power, And Authority, From Which All Orders Proceed. And Before Which All Creatures Bow.

This Throne Occupies The Very Center Of All Creation. Around This Throne, The Universe Revolves.

Isaiah Saw It, "High And Lifted Up,..." (Isaiah 6:1)
Ezekiel Saw It Like, "A Sapphire Stone:" (Ezekiel 2:26)
Daniel Saw It, "Like A Fiery Flame,..." (Daniel 7:9)

Now John Sees It. It Is An Unshared Throne.

Rev. 4:2b. "..., and one sat on the throne."

One Occupant Supreme, As Brilliant As A Precious Stone.

Revelation 4:3. And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald. (KJV)

He Could See No Form, Or Similitude, Any More Than Israel Could When God Came Down On Sinai.

Paul Tells Us About This Same God.

1 Timothy 6:16. Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen. (KJV)

Encircling The Throne There Is A Rainbow. The Symbol And Sign Of Peace. "Like Unto An Emerald." Green In Its Hue.

After Describing The Throne, And The One Who Sat Upon It, John Then Proceeds To Describe The Inhabitants Of Heaven.

The Twenty-Four Elders.

Around The Throne Are Twenty Four Lesser Thrones Filled With White Robed Elders.

Revelation 4:4. And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold. (KJV)

These Represent The Whole Church Of The First Born,

The Blessed And Holy Ones Whom God Hath Made Kings And Priests Unto Himself.

The White Robes Tell Of Their Purity, Their Victory, Their Joy,

The Golden Crowns, The Peculiar Possessions Of The Priest Of God, Tell Of Their High And Holy Function In The Presence Of God.

Why Twenty Four? And Who Are They?

They Represent The Twelve Patriarchs Of The Old Testament And The Twelve Apostles Of The New Testament.

The Two Churches Of The Two Dispensations Are One In Christ. (Acts 7:38)

The Church In The Wilderness Made One By The Blood Of Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 11:40b. "...,that they without us should not be made perfect."

The Twenty Four Elders Represent The Universality And Unity Of The Church Of God. They Are Redeemed By The Blood Of The Lamb.

Revelation 5:9b. ..., for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; (KJV)

Their Function. They Offer The Prayers Of The Saints.

Revelation 5:8b. ...and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints. (KJV)

John Continued To Look And To Write.

Revelation 4:5. And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God. (KJV)

Symbolical Of The Power And Majesty Of God, As Of Old When He Manifested His Presence On Sinai. (Exodus 19:16-19)

From Jehovah's Throne Forces Go Forth Which Cause Earth To Tremble.

Revelation 8:5. And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings, and an earthquake. (KJV)

Mighty Powers That Shake A Sinful World.

Thunderings And Lightnings And Voices...
But Articulate Voices He Does Not Hear.
John Is Listening To The Language Of Another World.

Revelation 4:5b. ..: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.

There Are Seven Torches Of Fire Blazing Before The Throne.

The Holy Spirit, Is Represented In His Seven-Fold Ministry, By Lamps Which Burn With Unquenchable Fire. (Ezekiel 1:12-13)

The Same Idea Is Expressed In Another Figure In Revelation 5:6, Where The Searching, Enlightening Power Of The Holy Spirit Is Typified By Seven Eyes.

Before The Throne

Revelation 4:6. And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.

Stretching Away From The Throne Was A Vast "Sea Of Glass," Clear, And Bright, Reflecting The Lights That Shone Upon It.

It Is Not Tempest-Tossed, And Agitated, Or, Unstable And Restless, Like Earth Seas, But Calm And Strong, Firm And Restful, Such Was This Sea.

All Calmness There, No Mighty Waves Of Turbulence Roar.

Psalm 29:10. The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD is enthroned as King forever. (NIV)

The Tossing, Angry Waves Of Earthly Revolutions Affect Not the Perfect Calm Of The Heavenly World. Not A Ripple Up There.

The Vastness Of This Sea Is Told In (Revelation 15:2,) As Well As The Firmness, When The "Redeemed Stand Upon It."

It's Clear Calmness, It's Firm Strength, It's Perfect Stillness, Is Demonstrated.

In The Midst Of the Throne.

Revelation 4:6b. ...: and in the midst of the throne, and round about the throne, were four beasts full of eyes before and behind.
7. And the first beast was like a lion, and the second beast like a calf, and the third beast had a face as a man, and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle.
8. And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.
9. And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever,
10. The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,
11. Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou they are and were created. (KJV)

All The Old Testament Worships Him, All The New Testament Worships Him.

"Four Beasts." (KJV)
"Four Living Creatures." (ASV)
Or Better Still "Four Living Beings."

In Revelation John Uses Two Distinctly Different Greek Words Which Have Been Translated Into The Word Beast In The (KJV)

1. Zoon = "A Living Being," Or "A Living Creature."

Zoe = "Life."

This Word (Zoon) Is Used Twenty Times In Revelation, And Always Of Those Beings Which Stand Before The Throne Of God.

They Give Glory And Honor And Thanks To Him And Act In Perfect Harmony With His Counsels.

2. TheRion = "A Wild Beast."

(Acts 28:4) "A Venomous Beast."

This Word Is Used Many Times (39) In Revelation.

It Is Used For The Two Anti-Christian Potentates Who Are Destined To Control The Affairs Of Nations With Satanic Powers In The Closing Period Of the Age. (Revelation 13:1, 11)

In Our Reading (Revelation 4:6-9)

Zoon = "Living Ones,"
"Living Beings" Or, "Living Creatures."

One Thing We Know By The Use Of This Word Is That They (These Living Beings) Are In Possession Of Life.

They Were "In The Midst Of The Throne, And Round About The Throne."

One In Front, One On Each Side, And One In The Rear.

Three Questions Arise.
1. Who Are, Or What Are, These Living Creatures?
2. What Do They Represent?
3. What Is Their Function Or Duties?

First I Feel That They Are Synonymous With Living Beings We Find Described In The Old Testament.

Cherubims. (Genesis 3:24)
Seraphims. (Isaiah 6: 2, 6)
Creatures. (Ezekiel 1:4-28)

Strange, Mysterious, Not Representable, And Indescribable Forms.

We Have No Clear Idea What They Looked Like.

Faces Like A Lion, A Calf, A Man, An Ox, And A Flying Eagle.

They Are Described Both Here In Revelation, And In The Old Testament, As Being "Full Of Eyes."

Likewise, Isaiah And John, Saw Six Wings On Each, While Ezekiel (Ezekiel 1:6) Counted Four.

These "Living Beings" First Appeared When Adam And Eve Were Expelled From The Garden.

Genesis 3:24. So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life. (KJV)

We Learn From This Verse That They Were Deemed Worthy To Occupy "The Place" Where Only Perfect Righteousness Could Dwell.

"The Place, " Later On, And Throughout The Bible, Became Known As "The Presence Of God."

We Next Find Them In Connection With The Ark Of The Covenant.

Exodus 25:20. And the cherubims shall stretch forth their wings on high, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and their faces shall look one to another; toward the mercy seat shall the faces of the cherubims be. (KJV)

They Also Appear In Isaiah's Vision.

Isaiah 6:2. Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. (KJV)

And Also In Ezekiel's Vision.

Ezekiel 1:5. Also out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures. (KJV)

They Represent The Servants Of God.

Every Passage Of Scripture Which Refers To These Living Beings, Speaks Of Them In This Manner,
In Eden, In Isaiah,
In The Tabernacle, In Ezekiel, And John In Revelation.

They Are The Chief Ministers of God.

See How Near They Are To Him, Standing To Represent Him.

They Worship God, They Join In The Song, "Worthy Is The Lamb;"

They Are In Sympathy With God's Servants Here On Earth, "Bearing Golden Censers Full Of Odours, Which Are The Prayers Of The Saints." (Revelation 5:8)

They Are Holy, They Are Redeemed By The Blood, They Are Identified With The Church.

Because They Join With the Church In Singing The Song Of Redemption.

Revelation 5:8. And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints.
9. And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
10. And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth. (KJV)

Who Are These Living Creatures?

They Are God’s Highest Creation.
What Is God's Highest Creation?

Without A Doubt God's Greatest Act Is The Church.

God Has Spent More Time, More Effort, More Expense, On The Church Than All Else In Creation.
It Cost Him The Highest Price Imaginable, "The Precious Blood" Of "His Only Begotten Son," Jesus Christ.

So I Feel That These Highest Beings, Who Are Arranged So Close To Him, Represent The Church In It's Glorified Body.

By And By.

Ephesians 5:25. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
26. That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
27. That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. (KJV)

1 John 3:2. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

1 Corinthians 15:49. And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly. (KJV)

These Four "Living Beings" That John Saw, Already There, May Represent The Chief Ministers Of The Church Of God In All Ages And Dispensations Of Time, Prophets, Priests, Evangelists, And Apostles. Yes God Had A Church In The Old Testament. (Acts 7:38)

Their Ministry To Man Now.

Let Us Look At The Occasions Which These Heavenly Beings Have Appeared In History. All Of These Occasions Have One Thing In Common.

Every Time Man Saw These "Living Beings" It Was When The Way Man Had To Take Was Very Dark And Dreary.

1. When Our First Parents Went Forth From The Garden Of God, To The Thorns And Thistles Of The Wilderness, Which Was To Be Their Future Home... "The Cherubims" Appeared. (Genesis 3 :24)

2. When In "That Great and Terrible Wilderness" Amid Which The Children Of Israel Had To Wearily Wander For So Many Years... God Communed With His People From Between The Cherubim's. (Exodus 25:28)

3. When Isaiah Was Called To His Ministry During Those Dark Days After The Death Of The King... The People Had Sunk Into The Mire Of Sin... Isaiah Saw Them, Above The Throne. (Isaiah 6:2)

4. Ezekiel, When In The Sore Captivity At Babylon, "The Heavens Were Opened And I Saw Visions Of God," And The Four Living Creatures Appeared. (Ezekiel 1:5)

5. John Saw Them In The Midst Of Tribulations And Persecutions Which Was Happening To The Church Of His Day.

So That The Ministry Of The Cherubims Seems To Have Been, Besides All Else That It Was, A Ministry Of Consolation To Troubled And Sorrowful Men And Women.

The Songs Of The Living Creatures.

There Are Five Songs Which John Tells Us About.

It Is A Never Ending Song.

Revelation 4:8. And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.
9. And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever,
10. The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,
11. Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. (KJV)

They Echo What The Psalmist Said.

Psalm 16:11. "..: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore." (KJV)

Psalm 100:1. (A Psalm Of Praise.) Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.
2. Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing. (KJV)

In Our Reading Today (Revelation 4:8-11) We Have The Song Of Praise By Those Who Are Our Representatives In Heaven.

It Is A Ceaseless Song.

"They Rest Not.." (Revelation 4:8) No Stillness, No Rest, No Sleep.

The "Former Things Are Passed Away" And In A Glorified Body The Four Living Creatures Sing And Worship In Eternity.

Their Bodies Are Never Tired, Their Voices Never Give Out.

This Is Like It Should Be, And What it Shall Be, It Is the Ideal.

The Worship There Is The One Ruling, Intense, Unremitting Service.

It Is Anything But That Here, Too Much To Quell Our Thoughts To Earthly Things, Worry, Sorrow, Business, Pleasure, Position, Power, Wealth, Ect.

Real Worship Is Indeed Rare.

But In Heaven The Highest Forms, The Cherubims, Speak For All Of Us.

Psalm 145:10. All thy works shall praise thee, O LORD; and thy saints shall bless thee. (KJV)

Psalm 150:6. Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD. (KJV)

It Speaks Of The Holiness Of God.

The First Verse Of Their Song Goes Like This.

"Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty, Which Was, And Is, And Is To Come."

Isaiah 57:15. "For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place,..." (KJV)

It Speaks Of The Omnipotence Of God.

"Lord God Almighty..."
His Power Is Unlimited.

It Speaks Of the Eternity Of God.

"Which Was, And Is , And Is To Come."

Genesis 1:1a. "In the beginning God..." (JKV)

Psalm 90:2. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God. (KJV)

They Sang With Emotion, They Sang With Feeling.

When They Sang Those Who Heard Them Were Moved.
Even Inanimate Objects Move When God Is Praised.

Isaiah 6:3. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.
4. And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. (KJV)

Revelation 4:9.
(KJV)

It’s The Church’s Song Of Praise.

These Twenty-Four Elders, Along With The Four Living Beings, Represent The Church Of All Ages. The Elders Speak For All... In Them All Are Present. As It Is Promised Again And Again, That The Church Will Surround The Throne, And Be Close To Him.

It Is The Sign Of the Church's Recognition And Highest Honour, His Bride.

The Song Is Presented By The Church In Lowly Prostration.

"They Fall Before Him, And Worship Him, And Cast Their Crowns Before Him."

Never Do The Songs Of Praise From Earth Rise Higher Than When Presented In The Lowest Humility.

"They Cast Their Crowns Before Him..."

These Are Giving Themselves Completely, With All They Have, To Him That Sat On The Throne.

There Are Those Who Have Not, As Yet, Given Their Crowns, The Right To Rule, To Him.

But John Saw The Day When Even Those Had To Give Up Their Crowns.

Revelation 11:15b. "...The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ;" (KJV)

The Five Songs Of Revelation 4 & 5

1. The Song Of Praise To The Thrice-Holy God.

Revelation 4:8. And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. (KJV)

2. The Song Of Creation.

Revelation 4:10.
(KJV)

3. The New Song Of Redemption.

Revelation 5:9. And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
10. And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth. (KJV)

4. Chorus Of The Host Of Angels To The Lamb That Was Slain.

Revelation 5:11. And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; (100 Million + 1000’s of 1000’s) (Infinite Number)
12. Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. (KJV)

5. The Song Of All Creation Singing To God And The Lamb.

Revelation 5:13. And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever.
14. And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever. (KJV)
