What Your Smile Does To Me

It has been said that one picture is worth a thousand words but I think one smile is worth two thousand! A smile is one of the most beautiful things in the world because it has so many different reasons behind it.

Many great poets have written about the beauty of the sunset, the graceful flight of a bird and the elegance of a snow white swan! A smile can be all these things and more!

When I see a young girl smile I remember these words that a poet wrote over one hundred years ago. "She is not fair to outward view as many maidens be; Her loveliness I never knew until she smile on me. Oh! Then I saw her eye was bright, a well of love, a spring of light."

MAKES MY WHOLE DAY - A smile can often make my whole day! Sometimes when I'm on my way to work or just driving after a busy week, and I'm feeling low and blue, someone flashes me a beautiful smile and somehow my day begins to brighten!

A smile says a lot, and babe, when I see you smile I'm really listening! You've got so many different smiles that tell me just exactly how you feel or even what you are going to do!

SMILE OF DELIGHT - When you smile with delight, I feel like I'm on a roller-coaster! That sudden burst upon your lovely face when you buy a new dress, or open a surprise package, or find me standing at your door with a dozen red roses, means more than words could ever say!

When you smile this way I could jump for joy, because when you're happy, I'm happy, and isn't that what really counts? And you know, sometimes when you smile in delight, a soft red glow appears upon your cheeks and I love for you to blush because it makes you lovelier than you already are!

There is another smile, too, the soft and subtle smile of tenderness that comes upon your face and shines right through your eyes. It's there when you hold a new born baby or when you watch children playing in the park.

When you smile this way I know that someday when you have a child of your own, you'll be a perfect mother filled with love and understanding. It's that smile that sometimes brings tears to my eyes, because you look so Madonna-like.

MOST BEAUTIFUL OF ALL - You've got a sad smile, too, the kind you give when you don't really want me to leave, but you know I must. It lets me know that you're trying awfully hard to be brave and I think maybe it's the most beautiful of all. It lets me know just how very much you care for me and then I find it even harder to leave, so maybe I'll stay a little while longer, if you'll let me!

Then you've got a smile, that's sort of a little frown too, because when you look through the pet shop window and see the darling little puppies running around you've got to smile a bit. But then one little spotted puppy presses his nose to the glass and cries a bit because he longs for you to take him home. If I see you then, I'd probably buy them all and give you the one you wanted most!

You can get anything you want from me when you smile with that little frown, because it's filled with such understanding and sympathy that my love for you is overwhelming and all I want is to please you!

A TEASING SMILE - A teasing smile is something else you possess and it flashes on and off when you've done something special to attract my attention, like cooking my favorite dinner. This is the smile that comes out when you hide my car keys or when you run away from me in the park to hide behind the trees!

When I see you smile in this way I can sense the mischievous side of you coming out and know I'm in for some fun! This smile of yours warns me ahead of time that I may be rolling in the grass with laughter because you can be so beautifully wacky sometimes!

But sometimes, Babe, when you've done a job real well, or you've tried something new, or maybe you've won a poetry contest at school, you've got a smile that shows how proud you are inside!

And you've got every reason to be proud too! You've accomplished something wonderful and I'll want to take you in my arms and just hold you close for a while to let you know that I'm the proudest of all!

Once in a while you flash that smile for me because you're proud of something I've done. That makes me get all tingly down to the bottom of my feet because it means so much to make you proud of me!

I don't really mind working long hours, or rushing around to interviews, recording sessions and concerts when I know you'll beam with pride! It means a lot to any guy to have his girl be proud of him and I'm no exception.

SO VERY CAREFUL - Every step I take in life I want you to be proud of. Maybe that's why I'm so very careful sometimes about the roles I'm offered or the songs I sing. I don't want to do anything you won't be proud of!

And then, you've got that very special secret smile that's just for me! YOU know which one I'm talking about, because it's the same one I've got for only YOU. And when we see each other after being apart for awhile, this is the smile we greet each other with. It's the smile of Love, and belongs to us.

With this smile, we know exactly what life is all about, because it's sort of everything rolled into one - pride, happiness, tenderness, hope - all those things that bring so much beauty into this troubled world!
