Bobby As We Know Him
By Stefan, Barry, Zooey, Ric, Bill And Mitch
It's been said that actors are hard people to get along with - that they're temperamental, unfriendly and too competitive! But the stars who guested on "Here Come the Brides" and had a chance to work with Bobby Sherman, found that this just wasn't so! In fact, six of your faves enjoyed working with Bobby so much that they wanted to share the experience with you!
STEFAN ARNGRIM - I met Bobby several years ago when he starred on "Shindig." He seemed like a real nice person then, and I never thought that one day I would be co-starring with him!
When I worked on "Brides" in the segment called "The Man of the Family," I had a chance to really get acquainted with him. Bobby comes off as natural and real because he is! He's not overly ambitious, though he does know what he wants!
More than this, he's a very honest person, and at times when I asked for his opinion on how I was interpreting a scene, he always gave me a sincere answer!
Most of my part didn't deal directly with Jeremy, so I wasn't involved that much in shooting with Bobby. But off camera, we had lots of friendly discussions. One day when he wasn't working, he stopped by to say hello and brought his dog Dopey along to meet me!
Bobby's very good at taking directions from those with more experience than he, and he's always ready to try any suggestions. I guess that's why so many people enjoy working with him!
ZOOEY HALL - Working on "Brides" was a groovy experience for me! The only thing I didn't like was that I had to play a mean character named Junior Oates in a segment called "The Last Winter." This guy's so mean he tries to pin a murder on Jeremy, but in the end he's sent off to jail himself!
Bobby and I worked well together right from the start and usually we only had to rehearse our scenes one time before they were shot! Bobby's a great guy, and even when you meet him for the first time, you somehow feel after only a short while that you've always known him!
He's the kind of actor who is very scarce — he's unaffected by all the popularity he has, and he doesn't have an ego problem! Between filming, we talked a lot about his records and about what we hoped the future held in store for each of us.
I'd like to get to work with him again sometime and hopefully we'll be playing friends, not enemies, 'cos that's what we are!
BARRY WILLIAMS - My first day working on the "Brides" set is one I will never forget! Mostly, because everyone welcomed me so heartily and warmly that I felt like one of the family right away!
My role as a young Amish boy in the segment called "A Kiss Just For So," didn't give me much of an opportunity to work with Bobby because the story revolved around Jason. But, I had heard a lot about Bobby, and I was wondering when I'd get to meet him.
Finally, toward the last few days of shooting, he came on the set. He sat down in one of the chairs and watched the cast at work. Then, when I had finished with my scene, he came over and told me how well I did! It's ordinarily unusual for actors to compliment each other!
He asked me how I liked doing "Brides" and wondered about my future career plans. I told him I hoped to stay in entertainment because I really liked acting. He smiled approvingly and said that someday I would probably star in a weekly series of my own!
And he was right — shortly after that, I was signed to play the oldest boy on ABC-TV's "The Brady Bunch." I hope someday Bobby will be able to guest on my show!
RIC NATOLI - I always watched "Brides" every week on television, and I thought the show was excellent. That's why I was real excited when they offered me the part of Hosannah, a young Indian boy in the episode called "Hosannah's Way."
When I got to Columbia Ranch on the first day of shooting, I was a little scared. I didn't know anyone except the director, and I was a little bit uncertain about how the stars would treat me!
Lots of times I've worked on programs, and the series regulars act like I'm not even there! But, it was different with "Brides" 'cos everyone is so very concerned and friendly!
In my first scene, Hosannah meets Jeremy, and Bobby took me aside before filming started and helped me run through the part one extra time just for good luck! I didn't have many lines to say in that scene, but Bobby wanted me to "feel out" the part with him as Jeremy!
I'm sorry we didn't have much chance to really get to know each other better because most of the time we were working. It isn't often that you get the chance to work with someone who is interested in how well YOU do!
BILL MUMY - I never met Bobby before I had the opportunity to work on "Brides," but I did know the other stars. I was in an episode called "Break the Bank at Tacoma" and played the part of a happy-go-lucky juvenile delinquent!
It was a great part, and as Simon I helped Jeremy and Joshua 'lose' a bankrupt saloon they had been tricked into winning! My first day on the set, Bobby came out of his dressing room as I was passing by and introduced himself. "You're Bill Mumy, aren't you?" he asked. "I'm glad to know you!"
That started everything off nicely, and somehow I just felt comfortable around him. He's easy to get along with and always ready to give as well as take suggestions. Even when the going got rough and a scene had to be shot several times, he never got mad or seemed to tire!
One day during the lunch break, I asked him if he would listen to some songs I was working on. I think he was planning on going out alone somewhere since he had his jacket on, but he smiled and said "Sure, Bill," real enthusiastically! He even gave me some helpful music pointers later on!
Bobby's a great actor to work with, and I think that he'll go far. Not only is he talented and hard working, but he's concerned about those he works with!
MITCH VOGEL - Bobby Sherman is one of the nicest guys I've ever met! He really taught me a lot when I had the chance to work on "Brides" with him. I played the role of a deaf boy who hasn't learned to speak, and through the kindness, effort and love of Jeremy learns not only how to speak, but becomes aware of the goodness in many people around him!
Before I was on "Brides," I was a great fan of Bobby's, (I'm an even bigger fan now!) and I really admired his abilities. The first day on the set I was so excited to be meeting him, I must have asked him dozens of personal questions!
He answered them all and even signed several autographs for me! I knew from what I had read about him that he just had to be a really nice guy, and you know what? He was twice a nice!
We did a lot of talking, and Bobby took me to the cast party held on the last day of shooting for that segment! We had Coke and chips, and everyone laughed and had a good time! Working with Bobby has been one of the thrills of my life, and I hope I get the chance again. I promised him I'd make some love beads for him and they're almost ready!
