- Abelson Foundation Prize ...
-
- As the inaugural winner of the Abelson Foundation Prize, organized and
administered by the Chicago Composers Forum, Geoffrey Gordon has been
commissioned to write a new work for voice and mixed chamber
ensemble. Fallen Eve, after texts by British
poet Ted Hughes and scored for mezzo soprano, flute, clarinet, violin,
cello, one percussion and piano, will premiere, in Chicago, as part of the International
Contemporary Ensemble's (ICE) 2005-06
season. Additional performances, in Paris and Washington, DC, will be
featured as part of a collaboration between Ensemble Aleph and the
Contemporary Music Forum, in early 2006.

the 2004 adjudications. A new work for the Cyprus-based Duo46, in
residence at Eastern Mediterranean University, will premiere during the
2005-06 season. Fancywork, scored for guitar and violin, takes
inspiration from the colonial American aesthetic movement of the same
name.

New Work Commissioned ...
- The American Composers Forum, through the Composer Commissioning Program,
has awarded a commission for a new work for the Galhano/Montgomery Duo,
featuring recorder virtuoso Clea Galhano and harpsichordist Vivian
Montgomery. Echoes of Ferrara--the title refers to the town of
Ferrara, Italy, a home and haven to the arts during the reign of Duke Borso
d’Este, for whom Francesco del Cossa (c. 1435-c.1476), painted a series of
frescoes for his Palazzo Schifanoia, circa 1469-1470--will premiere in the
United States in 2005. Subsequent performances, including a premiere in
Brazil the following season, are also planned. Additional details to follow
in this space.
CSMTA Commission ...

- The Connecticut State Music Teachers Association, in connection with the
national organization, has awarded a commission for a new chamber work: A
Canticle in Shards, for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and piano, will
premiere at the State Music Convention in Hartford, in October, 2005.
This work, which derives music materials and inspiration from vocal works of
Thomas Tallis and William Byrd, will be recorded by L'Ensemble Portique, and
will soon be available through the streaming audio feature on this
site. More information to follow.
Collaboration with Ensemble Aleph and the DC Forum ...

the oldest new music ensemble in the United States, the Contemporary Music
Forum of Washington, D.C., is in the works for 2005-06. A pair of concerts,
