All Surnames in the Family Trees of
Thomas Samuel Vance and
Patricia Douglas Vance

Most of our families come from Scotland, Ireland and England to Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North and South Carolina and Middle Tennessee

     The information on these pages came from long research comprised of interviews with family members, famly bibles, correspondence, extensive research in libraries and on line searches. I have tried to keep up with my sources. If you find a source with a .ftw extension, that means I imported it from a famly file in my research. As a general rule, I put my sources on "notes" for the individual. Be sure to check them. If you find what you think may be of help in your search, contact me and I will furnish any further information I can.

Notes for James Washington (or Wesley) Whittaker

[whitake1.FTW]

{Carson Whitteaker's recollection is that this child only lived 10 years, but Benton D. Henry has a Family Group sheet indicating 2 marriages and 10 children. Resolution required on next trip}.

Higdon identifies him as James "Wesley", not Washington.

{Benton D. Henry's sources refer to James Washington as "Wash" and Rev. Carson Whiteaker's written remembrances reflect James only lived to be 10 years old. Why would the parents name two boys, 1 to 2 years between them, similar names?

I believe the boy that died at 10 years of age was neither "Wash or James Wesley or Washington" - they were one in the same. James Wesley (or Washington) had a family, i.e. 10 children. The records weigh heavy towards this conclusion.

Higdon's records James Wesley, b. 1844 as the husband of Sarah Ann Bryant and Rebecca Jane Neal also, but it does not record Nancy as a child of Sarah, or for that matter Rebecca either, she isn't recorded at all. Henry's records don't go beyond her birth.

Since James had a son named Wesley (Wilbert's father), could it be that the father and son's identities are being confused with each other? If James was known as "Wash", it seems reasonable to assume that he was James Washington.

This needs further investigation and clarification in the Monterey area.}
