All Surnames in the Family Trees of
Thomas Samuel Vance and
Patricia Douglas Vance
Most of our families come from Scotland, Ireland and England to Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North and South Carolina and Middle Tennessee
The information on these pages came from long research comprised of interviews with family members, famly bibles, correspondence, extensive research in libraries and on line searches. I have tried to keep up with my sources.
If you find a source with a .ftw extension, that means I imported it from a famly file in my research. As a general rule, I put my sources on "notes" for the individual. Be sure to check them. If you find what you think may be of help in your search, contact me and I will furnish any further information I can.
Notes for James Madison Whittaker
[whitake1.FTW]
"James killed a Jackson County resident, got in trouble and ran off where his daddy was, in Huntsville, Alabama. He died a few weeks after he got there and was buried there. Old man John Henry went after Nancy {his daughter, and her children} and brought her {them{ back here {Putnam County, Tennessee}".
{Swafford records YOB as 1816 as does Wilbert Whitaker. The Henry Family records reflect it as 10 March 1821. Since the Henry record gives a day and month, it must have been recorded someplace in their resources. We'll use that date, for now.
The Henry record also list the place of birth as White County rather than Overton County. Which records are the most reliable? Higdon records reflect Overton County.
Higdon records James as being the son of Delilah. I believe this is in error and this is my rationale. Five children were born between 1810 and 1826. Vina died in 1832 at approximately 37 - 42 years old. This is based on the 1810 birth of Sallie. Since Delilah was born in 1808, in Jefferson County, Tennessee, she would have been 24 when Vina died. Swafford indicates Vina as the mother of James.
Did John have two wives simultaneously? Had he divorced his first wife prior to 1821 when James was born? I think not. Delilah was only 13 when James was born and Vina was not yet dead. Vina is the mother of James!}
He is buried beside his father, John.
Household # 1701.
