All Surnames in the Family Trees of
Thomas Samuel Vance and
Patricia Douglas Vance
Most of our families come from Scotland, Ireland and England to Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North and South Carolina and Middle Tennessee
The information on these pages came from long research comprised of interviews with family members, famly bibles, correspondence, extensive research in libraries and on line searches. I have tried to keep up with my sources.
If you find a source with a .ftw extension, that means I imported it from a famly file in my research. As a general rule, I put my sources on "notes" for the individual. Be sure to check them. If you find what you think may be of help in your search, contact me and I will furnish any further information I can.
Notes for Delilah (Delila\Dilila) B. Harrison
[whitake1.FTW]
Higdon identifies the second wife as Delilah B. Harrison, mother of James Madison and Permelia Emmaline. I find this impossible to believe for the following reasons:
1. Delilah was born 1808
2. James Madison, b. 1821 when Deliah was 13 years old (when Vina was 21 - 31)
3. Hannah, b. 1824 (when Vina was 24 - 34)
4. Permelia Emmaline, b. 1826 (when Vina was 26 - 36)
5. Vina died at age 42 - 52 in 1832.
{ I think Higdon based her findings on the research of Pugh, or vice-verse.}
She appeared on the 1860 Madison County, Alabama U.S. Census as 52 years. old, hence. YOB = 1808.
{Henry's research comes to the same conclusions that I have reached, i.e. Delilah died in Alabama before 1869 and was probably buried there. In fact, if I'm reading John Whittaker III - Family Group (A) correctly, it appears that Delila was recorded on the 1860 census of Madison County, Alabama - but not on the 1870, therefore, she died before 1869. If Vina died in 1832 while living in Monterey, it would be more logical that she would have been the first burial in what is now the Whittaker Cemetery. Since her tombstone reads "MRS. JOHN WHITTAKER - MOTHER OF T.J. WHITTAKER - FIRST GRAVE IN WHITTAKER CEMETERY".}
Dillard records "It is almost certain that Dilila died sometime before 1853, one of the reasons John III sold his house and went to Madison County, Alabama ....."{She may have died before 1853, but I don't think so.}
Pugh records Delilah as the first burial in Whittaker Cemetery. {This must be an error. Vina was born between 1780 - 1790 in North Carolina and she died in 1832 between the age of 42 - 52. Delilah was born 1808 in Jefferson County, Tennessee and was only 24 when Vina died. If Delilah was buried there the grave marker wouldn't read: "MRS. JOHN WHITTAKER - MOTHER OF T.J. WHITTAKER - FIRST GRAVE IN WHITTAKER CEMETERY", since T.J. was born 18 DEC 1818. Delilah would have only been 10 when he was born. NOT!}
Listed in household of John in this census.
