All Surnames in the Family Trees of
Thomas Samuel Vance and
Patricia Douglas Vance

Most of our families come from Scotland, Ireland and England to Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North and South Carolina and Middle Tennessee

     The information on these pages came from long research comprised of interviews with family members, famly bibles, correspondence, extensive research in libraries and on line searches. I have tried to keep up with my sources. If you find a source with a .ftw extension, that means I imported it from a famly file in my research. As a general rule, I put my sources on "notes" for the individual. Be sure to check them. If you find what you think may be of help in your search, contact me and I will furnish any further information I can.

Notes for Thomas Jefferson "Jeff" Whittaker

[whitake1.FTW]

Thomas, "Uncle Jeff" as he was known in the community, was nearly decapitated when his throat was cut from ear to ear by his 22 year old intoxicated grandson, Jack W. Whittaker. Uncle Jeff tried to intervene in a fight between Jack and a man named Cooper. Jeff was 82 years old and Jack got so enraged when Jeff tried to stop the fight that he turned on his grandfather with a knife and cut his throat. This occurred within sight of Jeff's home and other family member witnessed the episode. Constable Alec Weeks shot a .44 caliber. revolver out of Jack's hand, hitting him in the left hand and hip and jailed him after Dr. R.L. Ray said neither wound was life threatening. Jack served a term in the prison at Nashville for his actions. {I believe it was Wilbert Whitaker that said - "Jack was eventually killed by his own son, Frank." (No documentation however).}

Household # 551. This census reports T.J.'s age as 39, that would mean he was born in 1821 rather than 1818. Since we have seen evidence that the census takers might have been estimating ages, we'll stick with 1818 for now.
