2 CONT PLUMTREE - Junior Vance, 77, of Plumtree, died Wednesday in a  Crossnorehospital.  Vance, a
2 CONC n Avery County native, was the son of the late ThomasB.  and Sarah Wiaenaan Vaace. He was a r
2 CONC etired merchant.

2 CONT Surviving are a son. Tommy Vance of Nashville, Tenn.; and a sister EthelWhitaker of Plumree
2 CONC . Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in PlumtreePresbyterian Church, of which he was a member
2 CONC .  The Rev. Wallace Wisewill  oficiatete.  Burial will be in Yellow Mountain Cemetery.

2 CONT The family will receive friends  from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at WebbFuneral Home in Spruce Pine

2 CONT Mrs Vance was a member of the Plumtree Presbyterian church  where shejoined about 65 years ag
2 CONC o and remained an active member until herdeclining health  about two years ago. She was a nat
2 CONC ive and life-longresident of the Plumtree section and attended the old Plumtree Academy.Abou
2 CONC t sixty years ago she was united in marriage to Thomas B. Vance whopassed away in 1928. Mrs
2 CONC . Vance was well known throughout Avery andMitchell counties.

2 CONT      Thomas Beauregard Vance was born at Altamont on the 9th day ofOctober 1861, and died a
2 CONC t his home at Plumtree Friday evening, September28th, 1928 at 7:20 o'clock.
2 CONT      The deceased was the oldest living son of Thomas D. Vance and ElmireDellinger Vance an
2 CONC d was one of a family of eleven children all but threeof whom are still living.  The others a
2 CONC re as follows:

2 CONT      In 1887, the deceased was married to Sara Wiseman who with eightsons and one daughter su
2 CONC rvive him.  The children are Ira, Ernest, Pat,Hobart, Ted, Hale, Ethel, Joe and Junior.
2 CONT      The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the church at Plumtree andwas conducted by Rev
2 CONC . T W Clapp assited by Rev Hall and was attended by agreat crowd of sorrowing and sympathizin
2 CONC g friends including nearly all ofthe businessmen of Avery County and many from Mitchell, man
2 CONC y of whom ahdclosed their places of business out of respect for the memory fo thedeceased.
2 CONT      The pall bearers were the six sons of Mr. W. C. Burleson, his formerbusiness associate
2 CONC ; R M, Dr. W.B., Frank, Henry, D P, and S L.
2 CONT      A profusions of beautiful floral tributes to his memorey were bornby  large number of yo
2 CONC ung ladies and over a hundred automobiles joined inthe procession that bore the remains fro
2 CONC m the church to the graveyard.
2 CONT      For nearly forty years, the deceased has been one of the leaders inthe development of th
2 CONC e intrests of Avery County.  For four years he was amember of the firm of Jones and Vance a
2 CONC t Elk Park, the remainder of thetime has been spent at his loved home in Plumtree.
2 CONT      In 1891 he was the leading spirit int he concern that built thesecond oldest mica mill i
2 CONC n the world.  Two or three years later he soldhis interest and in 1894, he and a brother D. T
2 CONC . Vance started in a verysmall way to grind mica under the name of Vnace Brothers.  In 1900
2 CONC , thefirm dissolved partnership and Mr. Vance has since conducted his businessin his individu
2 CONC al name, building up a splendid and profitable business inthe mercantile line as well as in o
2 CONC ther lines in which he wasitnerested.  Mr. Vance was a public spirited man and was the sourc
2 CONC e ofstrength that carried many of his neighbors over the hard places in lifethat sometimes be
2 CONC set all.
2 CONT      While the family has lost so much, their loss is shared in anunusually large measure b
2 CONC y the entire community and to a large extent bythe entire county.  He is enjoying the reward
2 CONC s of a well-spent all of thebusinessmen of Avery County and many from Mitchell, many of who
2 CONC m ahdclosed their places of business out of respect for the memory fo thedeceased.

2 CONT Everyone in our family who is interested in genealogy has been trying foryears to find the mi

2 CONT link between Matthew and the Rev. John Vans, A.M., the Scottish ministerwho started the Vance
2 CONT line in America.

2 CONT In the meantime, we can only go on what we do know, and this is thelatest on MATTHEW VANCE  o
2 CONC f the CAROLINAS.- The Latter Day Saints, whohave the largest collection ofgenealogy material
2 CONC , list Matthew as beingborn in Laurens County in South Carolina on July 21,1764. They list hi
2 CONC sfather as Samuel Vance who married Sara Colville. This Samuel wasprobably the brother of Joh
2 CONC n Vance  who had lived in Augusta County,Virginia. We don't know who was the first to move t
2 CONC o South Carolina..

2 CONT All we know is that Matthew was one of the first Vance's to move into ourToe River Valley. Wh
2 CONC y he chose this isolated part of the world in theearly 1800's will always be a mystery.. Mos

2 CONT My (Fran) grandfather, D.T. Vance, was always interested in "where" theVance's came from, an
2 CONC d he spent some time and money trying to find ourheritage from Europe. He obtained a copy o
2 CONC f "The Vans Family of France -England - Scotland- Ireland and America" compiled form officia
2 CONC l sourcesby Anne Plummer Johnson of Memphis, Tennessee in 1929.

2 CONT This is a long involved "Vance Lineage" from France where the name wasspelled Vaux, through S
2 CONC cotland and Ireland where it was spelled Vans, toAmerica and the Vance spelling, and goes bac
2 CONC k to 1066.While it isinteresting to read, it's hard to find the exact thread leading to theVa
2 CONC nce's of Plumtree, although it has been compiled for the directdescendants of Rev. John Van
2 CONC s A.M., the first of name to settle inIreland  - which we are.

2 CONT The problem is Matthew Vance 1.  D.T.'s sister, Juda Vance called him "anelusive person" whe
2 CONC n she began her search of our "roots" years ago, andno one, so far, has come up with the dire
2 CONC ct connection back fromMatthew's first appearance in Greenville, S.C. around 1800. Juda sayst
2 CONC hat he came into North Carolina and settled in Hunter's Chapel nearSpruce Pine. Others have s
2 CONC aid he
2 CONT came up the John's River into the Altamont section. Either way, he wasthe beginning for the p
2 CONC resent day Vance's in Western N.C.!

2 CONT The following account of Matthew is taken from a letter written by D.T.to a Mr. Biggs in Dee
2 CONC p Creek, Washington in 1950. Apparently Mr. Biggshad requested some information about our fam
2 CONC ily and D.T. was happy toreply. The letter is written in longhand, as he explained, his secre
2 CONC taryis too busy to type for him.
2 CONT 
2 CONT "I have your recent letter and will attempt to answer most of thequestions you ask. I will be
2 CONC gin with my Great Grandfather. Many years agoI asked my Grandfather, Louis Vance ,  if his fa
2 CONC ther (Matthew) fought inthe Revolutionary war. He said that he was too young. My records firs
2 CONC tmentions this: Matthew Vance, a sturdy Irish lad came to America to havea chance - and tha
2 CONC t he
2 CONT married a Scottish lass who came to America for the same reason. I noticeyou state that she w
2 CONC as born in 1770, which is about right."

2 CONT Apparently Mr. Biggs had some information about Barbara McVeigh whomarried Matthew. It shoul
2 CONC d be noted at this time that D.T. had suffered aslight stroke before this writing, and he di
2 CONC d ramble a bit with thisstory.

2 CONT The letter continues: "This Matthew Vance fought a duel with a man namedVaughn but before thi
2 CONC s he and Matthew started to fight, but a friendparted them. Vaughn then lived near Altamont
2 CONC , Avery County. Vance livedabout a half mile south west of Plurntree, When this man Vaughn sp
2 CONC oke ofgoing into the N. Toe River section his wife said to him - if you go overthere and if y
2 CONC ou have any words with that man Vance he will kill you,saying that Vance was the best shot i
2 CONC n WNC and that it is said that hewas afraid of 'neither the devil nor his angels'.
2 CONT 
2 CONT "Vaughn then said that there was no one that he was afraid of, remindingher that he could sho
2 CONC ot too. The duel occurred about 1^ miles south westof Plurntree.  Both had flint lock rifle
2 CONC s and both fired at the sameinstant.  Vaughn was standing on the door sill, but the door shut
2 CONC ter wasnot clearly open.  Vance's bullet struck Vaughn in the chest then itpierced the shutte
2 CONC r.  Vaughn's blood splashed against the shutter.  Iasked my grandfather what became of Vaughn
2 CONC 's bullet.  He said my daddysaid Vaughn's bullet whizzed over his head.  This was Burke Count
2 CONC y whenVance was tried at Morganton NC."

2 CONT No one, to my knowledge, has ever checked the records to see if the trialtook place. If it di
2 CONC d, he obviously was not convicted .
2 CONT 
2 CONT The day after the above letter was written, D.T. wrote a second letter toMr. Biggs as follows
2 CONC :  "There was a little more that I wanted to tell youabout my Great Grandfather Matthew Vance
2 CONC .  Just before he had the duelwith Vaughn he had been a soldier under Andrew Jackson, havin
2 CONC g fought atthe Horse Shoe Bend in Alabama in 1813 under Jackson and then again onthe Plain o
2 CONC f Charlmotte near New Orleans on Jan. 8, 1815, but still wehave never found out when he die
2 CONC d nor where his grave is, but it shouldbe near here (Plurntree).  We did, however, locate th
2 CONC e grave of hisbrother John who was born May 1, 1753 and died May 1830. His name wasnicely cu
2 CONC t on just a country stone located in the Mount Carmel Cemeterythis side of Spruce Pine, he ha
2 CONC ving lived on Buck Ridge near whereMatthew had lived. Matthew, of course, was familiar with I
2 CONC ndian fighting,killing panthers also and that is why he was considered the best shot inWNC, a
2 CONC nd that he was afraid of 'neither the Devil nor his angels'. Nowthis is about all that I ca
