2 CONC articularly in thevicinity of St. Anne, which has grown from the four or five log. housesof t
2 CONC hat day to the present beautiful little village of over one thousandinhabitants. Mr. Cheffr
2 CONC e was born in Montreal, Canada, on the 4th ofJuly, 1824, and is a son of Joseph and Argette (
2 CONC La Vine) Cheffre. In 1851he came to Illinois-in company with his brother Antoine. In his nati
2 CONC vecountry he received a good common-school education and resided under theparental roof unti
2 CONC l arriving at man's estate. In 1841 he went toSyracuse, N. Y. with his father, and lived in t
2 CONC hat city and at NiagaraFalls for seven years. The family then returned to Canada, but in 1851
2 CONC emigrated to Illinois with a large French colony, consisting of aboutfive thousand persons un
2 CONC der the guidance and supervision of FatherChiniquy, and which located at St. Anne. Mr. Cheffr
2 CONC e has been marriedthree times. His first wife was Miss Sarah Morris, daughter of FrancisMorri
2 CONC s, and by this union one child was born. Joseph, who married MissNelda Dubs. They live one mi
2 CONC le southeast of St. Anne. His first wifehaving died. on the 20th of May. 1863..our subject wa
2 CONC s united in marriagewith Mrs. Millie (Schose) Cheffre. widow of Charles Cheffre. by whom sheh
2 CONC ad four children: Charles. Emily, Moses and Zulinda. Charles marriedMi-s Mina Spinnard, a nat
2 CONC ive of Kankakee County, in January. 1882. andfour children, three sons and one daughter, wer
2 CONC e born to them; they areresidents of Kankakee County. Zulinda married Stephen Lanctot, a nati
2 CONC veof Canada, in June, 1889, and they are residents of Chicago. Mosesmarried Miss Mary Regnier
2 CONC , a native of Illinois, in December, 1887, andthey reside in Iroquois County, III. By her sec
2 CONC ond marriage Mrs. Cheffrewas the mother of four children, a son and three daughters. Frank ma
2 CONC rriedMiss Rose Regnier, and has a daughter, Ruby; their home is one mile fromSt. Anne. Joseph
2 CONC ine became the wife of Antoine Goyette, and has twochildren, Eddie and Artie; they live nea
2 CONC r Trimello, Iowa. Mina is thethird in order of birth. Zue is the fourth child. Emily was firs
2 CONC t marriedto Joseph Brouillette, and to them were born three children: Jessie,George and Arthu
2 CONC r. She is now the wife of Julian Charboneau, and residesin Chicago. Mrs. Cheffre was called f
2 CONC rom this life September 21, 1886. In1887, our subject married Mrs. Fornier, who had also bee
2 CONC n twice marriedbefore. In addition to his good residence property in St. Anne, Mr.Cheffre own
2 CONC s three hundred and twenty acres of well-improved farm land inKankakee and Iroquois Counties
2 CONC . He has always been an industrious andhard-working man, and it is to his own economy and toi
2 CONC l that he owes hissuccess in life. He and his wife hold membership with theFrench-Presbyteria
2 CONC n Church,   He affiliates with the Republican party,and takes a lively interest in the publi
2 CONC c welfare. Personally, he ispopular, being of a genial, though quiet and thoughtful, disposit

2 CONT ANTOINE CHEFFRE is a retired farmer residing in St. Anne. He is a nativeof Montreal, Canada
2 CONC , in which city his birth occurred on the 15th ofJune, 1828. His parents, who were also nativ
2 CONC es of Canada, were Joseph andArgette (La Vine) Cheffre. The father of the former, also name
2 CONC d Joseph,was born in France, and afterwards emigrated to Canada, where he engagedin agricultu
2 CONC ral pursuits. The maternal grandfather of our subject wasborn in Canada, and was also a farme
2 CONC r by occupation. He livedo beseventy-two years of age. The father was a stone-cutter, as wer
2 CONC e also allof his sons. He came to Illinois in 1851, and settle upon a farm one mileeast of St
2 CONC . Anne, which he cultivated for twenty years. He then sold thisproperty and located in Kankak
2 CONC ee, where for four years he engaged inbuying and selling wood and stone. Returning to St. Ann
2 CONC e. he made hishome with his son Joseph until his death, which occurred a number ofyears ago
2 CONC , when he had reached the age of seventy-four years. He was asoldier in thenar of 1812. The d
2 CONC eath of his wife occurred about fiveyears subsequent to that of her husband. Their family con
2 CONC sisted of twelvechildren, ten sons and two daughters, of whom seven sons are stillliving. Ant
2 CONC oine Cheffre passed his boyhood and youth in Canada, where helearned the trade of a stonemaso
2 CONC n. With his family he went to Syracuse,N.. Y.,in 1841. where he lived for seven years. With t
2 CONC hem he returned toCanada, and after remaining there two years came west to Illinois withhis b
2 CONC rother Joseph. They landed in Chicago in  1850 where they stayeduntil the following year. Com
2 CONC ing to St. Anne, they together purchased thefarm for their father, upon which he afterwards l
2 CONC ived for a score ofyears. They then sent for him to come with his family from Montreal,whic
2 CONC h he did, arriving the same year. In October, 1853, Mr. Cheffre wasmarried to miss Margaret
2 CONC , daughter of Francis and Margaret(Bouchey)Morsett, both natives of Canada. Their union has b
2 CONC een blessed with fivesons and two daughters, three of whom are now deceased. Those living are
2 CONC Joseph, who married Miss Isadore, daughter of Max St. Peter. They havesix children: Eddie, Em
2 CONC ma, Walter, Ruby and an infant, and reside a mileand a-half northwest of St. Anne. Edward mar
2 CONC ried Miss Nena St. Peter, andthey have one son, Meddy. Their home is in St. Anne. Frederick w
2 CONC eddedMiss Leona Dumantil. and two sons, Harry and Elmer, have blessed theirunion. Francis wed
2 CONC ded Miss Rosalie Varboncaque. and to them have beenborn Max and Dora. The three younger child
2 CONC ren. Dennis, Marv and Olive,are deceased. When Mr. Cheffre settled in this vicinity, the coun
2 CONC try waswild and hut little inhabited. Wildgame of all kind abounded, and even inthe city limi
2 CONC ts of Chicago wild fowl were often shot. Our subject ownsone hundred and fifty acres of lan
2 CONC d in Iroqnois County, three miles southof St. Anne, and also owns his pleasant and comfortabl
2 CONC e residence in thatvillage. He and his wife are members of the French Presbyterian Church,an
2 CONC d in regard to politics, he is a stalwart Republican.
