From the book, A JACKSON FAMILY HISTORY: PUTNAM COUNTY, TENNESSEE ANDBEYOND by Michael Stephen Jackson, 202 East St. Clair Street, Freeburg,IL 62243-1243.According to Benton Henry, Lidge (Lidgard Fine) Henry was named forLidgard FINE b 1755 VA of Cocke County, TN who was the son of PeterFine. Lidge is pronounced with a short "i", like "ridge" I think thename evolved from the surname "Ledyard", because in earlier spellings itis seen, someitme, as Ledgard, with an "e". The name "Vinet" came fromthe Fines as well. Lidgard was sometimes spelled "Ledyard".

More Stories from Benton D. HenrySpeaking of stories, here is one about our common ancestor that I shouldshare with you. It was
passed down through several branches of his descendants essentially thesame, according to Bea
(AKER) RODEN who wrote it to me in 1981. Bea is a gg. granddaughter ofLidge F. & Nancy
(THOMAS) HENRY as we are, but through George W. HENRY b. 1841. I firstlearned of it
from Wilbert WHITAKER, when he took me to HENRY CEMETERY in 1971:THE DEATH OF LIDGE F. HENRY
"Family talk says that Lidge F. was married twice after Nancy died in1888. At the time of his death he was living with his daughter LuranaJACKSON at the foot of the mountain. We think it was the original home-place on the CALFKILLER, where HENRY CEMETERY is now, and that Lurana andher husband, James, had moved in with Lidge after he became too old towork."
"About a week before his death, his daughter-in-law, Rachel, told herhusband, George W. HENRY, and son, Lidge Fine, that 'Sane-thing hashappened to your Pa. ... .you need to go see about him' . As Rachel wasknown to be able to ' see ', or have premonitions, they rode down themountain to see him. No one was home except Lidge F. They found him upin the barn loft, where he had removed several planks from the loftfloor. George W. asked his father what he was
doing. Lidge muttered something about 'fixing the floor'. G. W. waitedfor his sister, Lurana, to return, and then visited with her a while. Ashe was leaving he told her, 'Keep an eye on Pa -- he's acting a littlepeculiar'.""A few days later, Lurana had to visit a neighbor, and left her teenagedaughter to watch over the baby and her grandfather. At some point Lidgetold his granddaughter he was 'going to the barn',and thinking he wasgoing to the outhouse, she got busy with the baby and forgot about him."
Lidge evidently "went up in the barn loft, threw a rope over the rafterabove where he had removed the floor planks, tied the rope around hisneck, and stepped into the hole he had made..."
That's the way they found him. The date, according to his tombstone, was23 Aug., 1895. He was buried, of course, next to his wife, Nancy, atHENRY CEMETERY.
He was 73 years old.
* * *
No doubt Lidge's children contemplated this event for a long time -- aswe, his g.g. grandchildren, are left to do... Though this happened fourgenerations and a little more than a hundred years ago, the humanconnection is always within us.

"Our John and Susanna HENRY of White CO. were not the John HENRY -Susanna Day who were married in RHEA CO. TN. in 1816. That John, s/oJohn HENRY Sr. of RHEA CO., died young, around 1819 or so & I have allkinds of records to prove it. His land was sold to his bro.-in-law, JohnDAY. HENRY "Quagmire" in general... ANYWAY our own ggg. gm., Susanna, b.cl790 in SOUTH CAROLINA, remains my number-one mystery, after threedecades of searching. I've collected several hundred HENRY marriagerecords from TENN., VA., N. C.,and elsewhere, and our John and Susannaare not among 'em. All COCKE CO.records, 1797 to about 1879, went up insmoke with the courthouse in the 1870's; likewise the early WHITE CO.marriage records were lost during the CIVIL WAR, for the period of timeour John and Susanna would have been married if they were marriedthere. They were not married in ROANE CO., as far as the records show, where John's "brothers" Vinet, George, and Joseph went
(for no explainable reason) to marry ROANE CO. girls in 1818, 1820, and1821... I have long suspected that our HENRY gang stayed a while in somecounty in-between COCKE and White, between 1798-1811, especially theKNOX-ROANE area, but if so, I've found no footprints. John first showedup in WHITE CO. in the 1811 TAX LIST; then old George (with, presumably, the rest of the family) showed up next to John in 1812. By the time ofthe 1820 CENSUS, old
George has died, "Annie" has likewise disappeared, and the WHITE CO.CENSUS has the households of George (Jr.), Joseph, John, and Vinet. John\ has four children, two boys and two girls, in his household by 1820, soit is apparent he has been married since about 1815, at least. I havestudied dozens of S. According to Benton D. Henry, George served as an Ensign in the Cocke Co,Tennessee Militia in 1798 with a Major Peter Fine, and his son, Lt.Lidgard Fine could suggest a reason for the children's names. It isbelieved that Vinet Henry b. 1793 was named after Vinet FINE of CockeCo., who was killed by Indians. According to custom, names were passeddown in this way. This also suggests an earlier relationship but stilldoesn't make it certain that his wife's name was Annie FINE.
Also, from Benton Henry, "This famiy group is not proven however, Georgeand Annie are the only possible parents in White County Records".

"I'm delighted to have been able to share my research with you, gathered
the hard way, bit by bit, over three decades -- that's what it's for. In
the search for ancestors (like life in general) the giving is its ownreward.
But I've found that the more I give, the more comes back to me. The old
philosophy is true I So I ask only that you transcribe my workaccurately.
In places where I have speculated, be careful not to forget the "maybe".
(We have to be careful what we say in genealogy - over time, the "inaybe"
stuff has a. way of becoming accepted, and repeated as fact, in spite of
anything we do...) And- make your sources clear: Give me credit for what
was mine; anything added, make it clear that this info. didn't come fromme!"I will endeavor to make it clear that anything not coming from Bentonwill be so noted. I respect him and his many years of devotion to thesearch.
The source for the burial spot for George and "Annie" was anothercousin. Benton says: "NOBODY knows for certain where old George HENRYand "Annie" are buried.... Yes, probably one of our cousins said it. Butto state flatly that old George is "buried at HENRY CEMETERY" is playingfast and
loose with the facts. No one has found their gravestones there. We do
know that old George HENRY and our ggg. gf. John HENRY b. cl788 werelisted
together in Capt. William WILLIAMS' COMPANY in the 1812 "WHITE CO. TAXLIST; and a deed shows that John HENRY was living at the "Headwaters ofCALFKILLER" in Jan., 1817, shortly before old George died:TENN. LAND GRANTS, Vol. F, pg. 138:
"Indenture - 13 Jan. 1817, John SUTTLE and John HENRY, $30.00 paid, tract
on head waters of Calf killers fork of Caney fork, beginning on Cumberland
mountain, 10 acres including where said HENRY now lives. Wit: Thomas
HORNE and John HORNE." (Note that Thomas HORNE was one of the testators,
the other was Lewis BOHANNON, on old George HENRY'S will.)I would like to believe that old George and Annie are buried with some
of their children, grandchildren, and descendants at HENRY CEMETERY...
But the fact is that nobody knows."
There is some question as to whether this name is correct but it is agood guess.
This name obtained from Dave Welch dawelch@usit.net. Says he is a cousinto Michael Stephen Jackson and this info came from his book. He isdescended from Vinet Henry. This information he says is from the will ofGeorge Henry in which George names his wife as Anne, the only place whereshe is named. He later stated in an email that George's wife was AnnyFine.
On August 17, I received a Large packet of Family History Informationfrom Benton D.
