go west young man ...

or how i spent my summer vacation
june and july 1997

 seattle at night

following horace greeley's advice, i went west this summer.. i travelled from seattle to asia, through hong kong, to phnom penh and then to bangkok. went west to go east, went west to get home, went home to say farewell to a world as i've known it. the british empire's long world journey is at an end, cambodia's bold experiment with democracy crashed and thailand surges into the 21st century.

i did this with a dram of trepidation and bushel of butterflies in my stomach; it has been thirteen years since i've been back to asia, almost twenty since I've back to hong kong. It proved to be more exciting than i could have of ever dreamed.
