In Memory of Barbara Fraser Barbara Fraser – an extraordinary teacher and compassionate advocate for elders. Barbara’s concern for residents of long-term care facilities led her to serve for more than 15 years in the Ombudsman Program with distinction. Her tireless advocacy for residents’ rights made Barbara a role model and a mentor for scores of advocates. At the request of Barbara's family, the Office of the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman established the Barbara Fraser Legacy of Learning Fund after her untimely death on March 23, 2002. Ms. Fraser’s words, shown above, remind us to seek out the resources among us and so many of you have shared those resources with the Legacy of Learning Fund. We look forward to more opportunities to continue Barbara’s legacy through promoting professional development and public education in the fields of aging and long-term care. BARBARA’S LEGACY It is always a good time to remember again what a wonderful legacy Barbara left to her family, friends, co-workers and virtually everyone with whom she came in contact. If I could sum this up in one word, that word would be “caring.” Barbara was, above all, a deeply caring person. That caring is reflected in her work with the Ombudsman Program, a career she came to late in life. Barbara's caring nature was apparent in her passionate advocacy for the elderly and often forgotten people in nursing homes. But it was more than that. She cared deeply for her co-workers in the Ombudsman Program, who were her friends as well as associates. When she was put in charge of training Ombudsmen she relished the close relationships that developed, and imparted her own enthusiasm and caring to everyone else in the program. I would like to remember her in that light... the light of a person who cared for others, and for her important work. -- Neil Fraser

Barbara Fraser Legacy of Learning Fund

The Barbara Fraser Legacy of Learning Fund was established in 2002 to honor the legacy of Barbara Fraser, an extraordinary teacher and compassionate advocate for elders. The Fund promotes professional development and public education through the sponsorship of educational events and guest speakers with expertise and influence in the fields of aging and long-term care. Managed by the Office of the State Long-term Care Ombudsman, the Fund will continue Barbara’s commitment to excellence in education and collaboration with entities that share common goals. Her concern for residents of long-term care facilities brought Barbara to the Georgia Long-term Care Ombudsman Program in the mid-1980s. For more than 15 years she served with distinction in the various roles of volunteer, community ombudsman, and Program Manager responsible for training and certification of ombudsmen statewide. Her passion for learning and her innovative training techniques made Barbara an exceptional teacher. Her caring spirit and tireless advocacy for the rights of residents made Barbara a role model and mentor for scores of volunteer and staff ombudsmen throughout Georgia.
