The LDS Church has collected millions of records and many are on-line. Their web site is known as Family Search.

The ultimate source for genealogy web sites is Cyndi's List. Check it out. She has categorized - sliced and diced - the thousands of resources making it easy to find sites by country, topic, etc.

An awesome volunteer effort (now hosted by Ancestry.com) is Rootsweb.
