"Honey Buckets"

Gannosu
Page - 1

Gannosu, located between the base and Fukuoka, was and is a small village. Many GI families lived here or in Saitozaki if on-base family housing was not available. While other GIs without families also rented houses or apartments in the area. The airstrip that Brady Air Base used in its early days was also located at Gannosu, as was the orphanage supported by the base.

The picture above is of "honey buckets," used to carry and apply human waste as fertilizer in gardens and fields.

My first off-base quarters were also in Gannosu, pictured left, as were Richard Tassone's, who supplied most of these pictures. Before I moved in, it was rented by Juan Lebron, and I first met my future wife there during a birthday party for Juan in February 1966.

I later shared the small two room apartment with Juan before he moved to Saitozaki, and was there several months before I also moved to Saitozaki. It is also the location where I proposed to my wife, Chie.
