Superman The Movie

"4 Stars. A pure delight. Terrific entertainment." - Roger Ebert's Video Companion. The planet Kryton is doomed. Only one man, the scientist Jor-El, know it, and rockets his infant son to refuge on a distant world called Earth. As Jor-El's son grows to manhood, he learns he possesses super-powers he must hide from the ordinary mortals around him. And so, disguised as Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter for the Metropolis Daily Planet... Directed by Richard Donner (Lethal Weapon, The Goonies), Superman: The Movie makes you believe in the legend all over again. It takes a big movie to contain the talents of Marlon Brando (as Jor-El), Gene Hackman (Lex Luthor), Margot Kidder (Lois Lane), Glenn Ford (Jonathan Kent) and a dozen more distinguished players. Superman: The Movie, a 1978 Academy Award winner for Special Achievement in Visual Effects, is more than big enough. And at it heart (just as in its three sequels) is Christopher Reeve's warm, witty portrayal of the Man of Steel and his alter ego Kent. Watching Superman: The Movie isn't just like being a kid again. It's better.

Frankenstein

Starring Robert Foxworth and Bo Svenson. "As you might already know, Frankenstein was written back, a few years ago by some guy named Shelley - I never did catch his last name, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't Shelley Berman. The movie stars Robert Foxworth as Dr. Victor Frankenstein, and Susan Strasberg plays Victor's main squeeze - oops, you never want to say "squeeze" around Bo Svenson, who plays the monster. It's a sympathetic portrayal. The monster has the heart of a small child. He's also got the brain of a certain Professor Lichman, the spleen of a lady from Pacoima, the liver of...Hey - enjoy the movie!" Hosted by Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.

For eight consecutive nights in the winter of 1977, an estimated one hundred and thirty million people shared an unforgettable experience: the search by a black American for his family roots - and the courage and cowardice, the triumph and tragedy his investigations revealed. Big Bad Mama

Mama gives her little girls everything - including a life of crime. Paradise, Texas, 1932 - the Dust Bowl years. Wilma McClatchie, a voluptuous young widow played by Angie Dickinson, busts up the wedding of her younger daughter, 16-year-old Polly, and sets off on a spree with Polly and elder daughter Billy Jean. It begins with bootlegging and moves through a series of bizarre escapades as Wilma sets her sights higher and higher: bank robberies, gate crashing a society ball and finally, the kidnapping of a young heiress. In the meantime, the McClatchies pick up a pair of charming rogues, Fred Diller (Tom Skerritt) and William J. Baxter, a Kentucky conman portrayed by William Shatner. Wilma beds first one, then the other; when she leaves Diller, the girls take over - together. As the action escalates, so do the consequences. Polly is pregnant, the Feds are hot on the trail, and when the kidnapping turns sour, Diller and Baxter are left dead, with Dickinson mortally wounded. Filmed on location in the American Southwest, Big Bad Mama captures the look and feel of the Dust Bowl era with the raw energy which is producer Roger Corman's trademark. Using rare vintage automobiles, the film features a number of breakneck chases and getaways, and more than a few smoldering love scenes. The music, both the original score written by David Grisman and performed by the Great American Music Band, and vintage Dust Bowl ballad recordings by Woody Guthrie, Cisco Houston, Pete Seeger and Johnny Wittwer, adds to the film's period flavor. In its use of erotic undercurrents which elaborate on the violence and despair of Depression America, Big Bad Mama evokes memories of Bonnie and Clyde and They Shoot Horses Don't They. It's a look at a period of American innocence which has never been recaptured.
