History of the World - Part I

It's wild. It's crazy. It's history according to Mel Brooks. History of the World - Part I shows a rather different side of Moses, the Stone Age and the Roman Empire - in which Mel Brooks is a stand-up philosopher playing Caesar's Palace. Next, the truth is finally told about the Spanish Inquisition in a splashy production number featuring song-and-dance monks and swimming nuns. And a new twist on the origins of the French Revolution (Brooks reigns as Louis XVI) is deftly brought to light. Joining Mel on this delirious romp through time is an incredible cast - his repertory players Harvey Korman, Madeline Kahn, Cloris Leachman, Ron Carey and Dom DeLuise along with Sid Caesar, Bea Arthur, Henny Youngman, Hug Hefner, Jackie Mason, Gregory Hines and many others. It's history as you've never known it - completely irreverent and positively hilarious.

The Green Berets

The fire-packed grandaddy of all Vietnam War films. They were crack troops, an elite, hand-picked group of men skilled in the techniques of unconventional warfard. They were the soldiers of the Special Forces...and the focus of Hollywood's first feature film about the Vietnam War: The Green Berets. John Wayne stars in and co-directs this unabashedly red-white-and-blue depiction of America's Vietnam War effort, his most forceful film statement ever on the nature of duty and courage during times of political uncertainties. Wayne personally wrote to President Lyndon Johnson to request Pentagon assistance in filming and received all the military hardward - and then some - needed to create an impressive spectacle. Particularly dramatic is a long night battle in which the Special Forces camp is overrun by the enemy, then retaken. The ever-shifting perimeter, the mind-wracking cacaphony of explosion after explosion, the difficulty in distinguishing between friend and foe, and the nearly futile attempts at command communications during the chaos of battle vividly symbolize the war as it really was. The Green Berets is a benchmark in cinema history, a Vietnam battle film made at a time when Hollywood was steering clear of the controversy surrounding the war. But it is perhaps best seen, like the current Platoon and Full Metal Jacket, as a drama of any war. Its soldiers fit the familiar, likable mold of earlier John Wayne action classics like Back to Bataan and Flying Leathernecks. It is an adventure-packed tale of brave men under extreme stress...and the tall, tough-minded hero who leads them.

Caddyshack

Tee off with a foursome of the screen's funniest clowns. The greenskeeper is about to start World War III - against a gopher. The judge plays to win but his nubile niece has her mind set on scoring her own way. The playboy shoots perfect golf by pretending he is the ball. And the countryclub loudmouth just doubled a $20,000 bet on a 10-foot putt. Insanity? No. Caddyshack. Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight and Bill Murray tee off for a side-splitting round of fairway foolishness that does for golf what Animal House did for college fraternities and Police Academy did for law enforcement. Chase's laid-back delivery has kept audiences of Saturday Night Live and movie hits National Lampoon's Vacation, Fletch and Spies Like Us in the aisles for years. Sharing his wisdom with a caddy or his bed with debutante Lacey Underall, he never misses a shot. Rodney Dangerfield is - well, Rodney Dangerfield. Even when he's off camera, he's on. And fans that have made Easy Money and Back To School box-office hits like him just fine. Knight - possessor of the best slow burn since Laurel and Hardy - fusses, fumes and finesses his way through his role as Bushwood Country Club's one-man Legion of Decency. Murray's hole-in-the-head assistant greenskeeper is straight out of Looney Tunes. Murray, who brought the house down in Meatballs, Stripes and Ghostbusters, is funny even when he talks to himself. In Caddyshack, the term "golf nut" takes on a deranged double meaning - and the laughs are par for the course!
