LATER THAN YOU THINK

Everything is farther than it used to be,
even twice as far to the corner
and there is a hill I never noticed before.
I have given up running to the bus, it leaves faster than it used to do.

It seems they are making the stairs steeper than in the old days,
and have you noticed the smaller print in the newspaper?
There is no use asking anyone to read louder
as everyone speaks in such a low voice I can hardly hear them.

The material in dresses is so skimpy now especially around the hips and waist that its' almost impossible to reach one's shoelaces.

On the other hand people my age are so much older than I am.
I ran into an old classmate of mine the other day and she had aged so much that she did not recognize me.

I got to thinking about the poor old dear this morning when I was combing my hair and in so doing I glanced at my own reflection.
Really now, they don't even make good mirrors like they used to make either.

"The quality, not the longevity of one's life is what is important."
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Grandmother's Quilt

She started the quilt when just a girl
And added to it through the years.

Each patch compiled of memories
Connected by past smiles and tears.

A piece of cloth from a party dress
She wore to her very first dance.
A little square of bright red plaid,
Memento of a past romance.

A swatch of lace from her wedding dress.
Flannel saved from a baby shawl
A bit of a boy's worn blue pants
When he grew from short to tall.

Patch after patch, a tale unfolds
Sewn with Grandma's love and care
Her life recorded in the quilt
In each and every cherished squares.

First Grandchild

As I hold this grandchild
In my arms today
My respects to GOD
I fervently pray.

The life cycle has come
Full circle once more.
Giving me this child
To love and adore
Like a ray of sun
On a cold winter's day.

He thrills me and warms me,
In the same way
His dark solemn eyes gaze
Up into my face
Finding my heart
His own special place.
