Casablanca opened at New York's Hollywood Theatre
Thanksgiving Day, 1942, and went into general release on
January 23, 1943. All concerned considered it a disaster in
the making as newly written scripts were handed out on a
daily basis. They were wrong. Eight nominations (including
Bogey for best actor) garnered Casablanca three
acadamy awards; Best Screenplay (Julius J. & Philip P.
Epstein and Howard Koch), Best Director (Michael Curtiz),
and Best Picture of 1943. It remains a cult classic to this
day.
Averred Clifford McCarty in Bogey, "The size and
caliber of its international cast is still astonishing.".
This cast included Paul Henreid, Claude Rains, Conrad Veidt,
Sydney Greenstreet, Peter Lorre, *Pat Hargreaves, S.Z.
"Cuddles" Sakall, Dooley Wilson, and Helmut Dantine.
