Martin Wetzler Bookplate. Translation: "This book belongs to Carl George. Written the 28th of November 1857 by Martin Wetzler." Martin Wetzler was a Jewish fraktur artist, which accounts for the Star of David at bottom. For a while I couldn't figure out the writing on either side of the Star. The writing on the left looked like Greek -- alpha, gamma, delta, zeta, etc. The writing on the right looked sort like English for "J. Golch." A query on a Jewish genealogy board solved the mystery. The writing is simply Martin Wetzler's name in cursive Hebrew. Hebrew reads from right to left. So, the letters to the left of the Star translate as "relztov" and those to the right as "nitram." |
