View of the Long Bridge (rebuilt) over the Tennessee River at Bridgeport, Alabama. This view is looking East toward Chattanooga. . In their first action, members of the 39th and 43rd Georgia regiments were sent to defend this bridge. Poorly commanded by General Leadbetter, the Confederates burned part of this span and withdrew without fighting except for two groups from the 43rd Georgia who were deployed as "scouts" and exchanged fire with the advancing Union forces. |
