Dear
Dea,
Thank
you for taking the time to visit KABA Audio Productions regarding the
preservation of "Father's" recordings. In previewing the masters I noticed
a mildew odor and residue on several of the reels. This could be caused from
storing the masters in a humid environment. When tape is not used for long
periods of time the resin coating can become sticky and actually break away
from the tape backing resulting in a loss of audio in those areas.
The
best way to preserve your masters is to have them transferred to a more durable
media such as CD. Some engineering & mastering could help "clean
up" the sound which you had a chance to hear in the studio during your
visit. Since you have a large quantity of masters this will be a long process.
In the meantime while you decide what to do I recommend storing the reels in a
safe, clean & dry environment. You may also want to consider replacing any
damp or mildewed boxes with new boxes.
If
you would like to proceed with this project please advise Lauraine and she will
schedule the time with me. Thank you again for contacting KABA. I look forward
to assisting you with this endeavor.
Sincerely,
Kevin Fleming
