Saturday morning 24th Dec. 1864
Dear Elly
Yours of the 20th Inst. has been Rec'd. Glad to hear that you are well etc., we are all tolerably well, that is our mess, but there is a great deal of sickness here amongst our Soldiers diarrhoea pneumonia and some cases of Typhoid fever, I think it is caused from so much exposure on guard duty and such sudden changes of the weather, and Boys are generally bad clothed & likely to be worse. Elly I am glad that you got off one of my Bonds, if you can get off any more of them I would be glad you would do so for me, Elly I am glad to hear that you are about to make a start for the change which you have so long been talking about, I have no war news of importance. Savanah is gone up the spout and I see the papers is saying that it was of no importance in a military point of view, now when Charleston & Wilmington goes up they will be of no importance, so finally we are doing first rate and every thing is going on for the best, it is rumered here that Davis is dead & would not be surprised if it was so, or soon will be so. I have nothing more to write so I close. I will write a little to pah which you will send over. Your friend as ever.
