ISRAEL DIARY
by
Zvi Zaks
Since 1994, I have spent one month each year in Israel, volunteering my services. The hospital in Nahariya, a town up north, gives me a small apartment and renews my Israeli medical license - and I teach. I work mainly with young immigrant doctors from the former Soviet Union. Their technical knowledge is good, but they tend to follow the book rigidly, and too often treat the disease while ignoring the person who is sick. My friends think I am crazy to spend my vacations in this medical busman's holiday, but for me it is fun.
In 2001, because of the intafada, people really thought I was crazy. My wife was worried. But I came anyway. To explain why would take too much time and would be too personal in any event, but I went. Because of the political situation, I kept the following diary.
