Prayer Points Pray for our Nation by Carl Davis
“It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and The Bible.” - George Washington The single greatest threat to our nation and our government is that they’ve turned their backs upon the Sovereign; The Only One Who can save us from ourselves. Another problem with our government today is that it is so heavily laden down with politicians instead of public servants. If we as a citizenry do not investigate the candidates for office and instead vote from the hip with who’s the best speaker or has the highest education or younger, older, favorite gender etc; instead of investigating a persons character and record, we will get what we deserve; more politicians and less public servants. We need God more than ever; along with transparency of government if we are ever to effectively have change and bring our nation back to its foundational moorings. "A popular government without popular information or the means of acquiring it is but a prologue to a farce, or a tragedy, or perhaps both." - James Madison ***** "People should never fear their government, their government should fear the people." - Thomas Jefferson The point of the Jefferson’s quote is to show that we should not fear that the government is going to take away our rights, but rather that the government (elected politicians) should fear that the people will overthrow it if it doesn't function as a Constitutional republic should. Our Nation was formed as a government of the people, by the people and for the people. That meaning the people controlled the government. In a Constitutional republic everyone has an equal vote, if the majority of the people want change then, ideally, the government changes for that majority. But with the downfall of morals and the greedy hunger for manna and power of elitist people who are either corrupted after exposure to the cesspool of our current government or have gained their office with that intent from their beginnings are now in control and the rights of the people are of no concern any longer, since the threat of an overthrow doesn’t exist. "Because power corrupts, society's demands for moral authority and character increase as the importance of the position increases." - John Adams Soon we will be going to the polls, but I offer another quote to consider when you hopefully pick your candidates and proposals by their character, merit and intent: "It's not the people who vote that count; it's the people who count the votes." - Joseph Stalin It's not like this guy needed anyone's votes for anything. In terms of being thoroughly unconcerned with elections, you'd be hard pressed to find a better poster boy for electoral indifference than Stalin. He had 20 million Russians murdered just because he could, which by itself makes Hitler, Idi Amin and Slobodan Milosevic all look like a bunch of kids sitting around on a playground busting toy pistol caps with a rock. But he did understand politics! ***** This turns me back once again to the root of the problem of what is truly the problem with our nation and its government today: "I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth -- that God Governs the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire cannot rise without His aid?" - Benjamin Franklin I dare say that any nation that has turned from God, or mocked and shunned Him paid a rather heavy price for their sin and disrespect. The Bible is replete with nations that have fallen and even the nation of Israel is given to us as evidence of what happens when they turned their backs upon Him. Please pray for America to once again turn back to God; Yes even pray for those politicians who are atheist or push agendas like abortion and other things, which The One True God calls an Abomination!! He is ever capable: "The king's heart [is] in The Hand of The LORD, [as] the rivers of water: He turneth it whithersoever He will." - Proverbs 21:1 -Reprinted with permission from Carl Davis Mr. Davis is a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church in Port Deposit, Maryland. Solemn Assemblies "The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective" (James 5:16 NIV). As children of God and members of His royal priesthood we have the great privilege of making our requests known to Him. Our Lord wants us to depend on Him in every endeavor. Therefore, prayer should be our first resource, not our last hope. Missouri Baptists are in a time of great need that many of our leaders recognize will only be met through concerted individual and corporate prayer. To encourage this needed prayer our State Convention is promoting a series of Solemn Assemblies. One is scheduled at Union Hill Baptist Church, Holts Summit on Thursday, October 2 at 7:00 p.m. Brother Phil is organizing a carpool to attend this assembly. Also, a carpool will leave from Hermann on that date at 5:45 p.m. There will be a statewide solemn assembly held prior to the convention in St. Louis on Sunday evening, October 26. We realize many will be unable to attend this meeting due to commitments to their own churches. Brother Phil is encouraging our Association Churches to have a prayer assembly at this time. Following is a suggested program for these local church prayer assemblies:
Opening Hymn - "Holy, Holy, Holy" Scripture Reading - 1991 Baptist Hymnal #676 Prayer for Spiritual conviction and guidance in this assembly
Hymn - "I Surrender All" Scripture Reading - 1991 Baptist Hymnal #694 Prayers of Confession and Repentance
Hymn - "Mine Eyes Have Seen The Glory" Scripture Reading - 1991 Baptist Hymnal #721 Prayer for our Nation and Government Leaders
Hymn - "The Church's One Foundation" Scripture Reading - 1991 Baptist Hymnal #699 Prayer for our Church, Association and Convention
