The Sacrifice of Love

In Charles Dicken's classic novel, A Tale of Two Cities there is a very moving love story woven into the saga of the French Revolution. Charles Darney and Sidney Carton both fall in love with the same woman, named Lucy. Lucy eventually chooses Charles and they are married, but Sidney never loses his love for Lucy.

Some time later, Charles is caught up in the Revolution, arrested, and sentenced to die on the guillotine. Sidney, a lawyer, hears about Charles' plight and arranges to visit him in the prison the night before his scheduled execution.

On his way to visit Charles, Sidney passes by his estate and notices the daughter of Charles and Lucy through a lighted window. As he watches her, he realizes what he must do.

Because of his love for Lucy, Sidney changes clothing with Charles. The guards thinking he is Sidney allow Charles to leave the prison and the next morning, Sidney is executed in the place of Charles.

Sidney died, so Charles could go free. This is what Jesus has done for us. He died so we can go free.

On a cross at Calvary, some two thousand years ago, Jesus the Son of God, suffered our punishment for sin and died in our place. To prove He was dead, He was buried for three days. Then, He rose from the dead and offers everlasting life to all who will believe that He died for them and rose again.
